HISTORY

The Jackson Street (SW 5th Street) Bridge is a three span, pin connected Pratt truss that was originally built in 1898. The three spans served as a vehicular bridge from 1898 to 1993. In 1996, the spans were closed to traffic, and following structural repairs, that same year, the structure was reopened for pedestrian use only. In 2004, some minor structural repairs were done and the wooden deck was replaced as part of a trail construction project. The bridge was closed to all bike and pedestrian traffic in 2013 after an extensive evaluation revealed the structure had become unsafe.

In 2014, the cost to repair and restore the bridge was estimated at $2.3 million, $750,000 of which is budgeted in the FY2017 Capital Improvements Budget. City Council gave permission for the remaining $1.05 million to be raised via private fundraising.

This is the notice for last years event. Here is the email that I just got from the DM parks department. In the past, if you volunteered, you got free registration. If you helped with registration, you were often done in time to ride.

Greetings,

As we welcome an early Spring, it is time to prepare for the 2016 Mayor's Annual Ride and Run for Trails (MARR).

We are looking for volunteers to assist with check-in/registration, guides for the run and rest stop volunteers.

MARR will take place on April 16th this year.

Check-In/Registration volunteers should arrive at 7:15 a.m.

Rest Stop volunteers should arrive at 9:00 a.m.

The run starts at 8:00 a.m. and the ride begins at 10:00.

Please email parksvolunteer@dmgov.org or call 515-248-6373 to sign up or for more information.

I was trying to figure out what the "Jackson Street Bridge" was but it did not show up in Google. I thought it might be the closed bridge down from Mullets. I found a photo of the sign I took, calling it the "SW 5th Street Pedestrian Bridge, also known as the Jackson Avenue Bridge." Indeed, Jackson Avenue comes up (but Jackson Street was found in Norwalk).
