Arriving deputies found a man with serious injuries just before 2:30 a.m at Old Lincoln Highway and Northline Drive in Council Bluffs. The man, later identified as William Shepard was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The vehicle that hit him had fled. Two days later a individual came forward who thought they hit something, possibly a deer," Sheriff said Sunday. (Deputies) found damage to the vehicle consistent with the accident. His vehicle was seized as evidence and he will be interviewed again to see if his story is consistent with what investigators learned at the scene. The driver’s name will not be released unless charges are filed.

David L. Schuldt, 83 years young, of Iowa City died after being struck from behind Monday morning on old U.S. Highway 218 just south of Iowa City. The driver of the minivan,Shaena Elizabeth Beachy, 26, of Kalona,couldn't move to the left to avoid Schuldt because of traffic in the adjacent lane and hit him, according to the Iowa State Patrol. The State Patrol report says the investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed at this time. Schuldt began duties as a minister in 1965and officiated more than 700 weddings.

Iowa businessman and former Democratic gubernatorial candidate Fred Hubbell was hit by a car while riding his bike in Scottsdale, Arizona. According a family friend, a motorist ran a red light and struck Hubbell on Friday. Hubbell has undergone two different surgeries for a broken pelvis. The injuries are not life-threatening but will require significant physical therapy.

An unidentified female critically injured in a traffic accident near Kanesville and Main in Council Bluffs around 10:30am on a Tuesday morning. Police say the bicyclist was northbound on the sidewalk at the intersection. North and southbound traffic had a green light. Kathryn Anderson, 19, of Council Bluffs, was southbound and turning east onto Kanesville Blvd. As she made her turn, she did not see the bicyclist crossing the road and they collided. Investigators said Anderson had the green light, but aren't sure if the bicyclist had a walk or don't walk signal. The bicyclist was taken to the hospital for treatment of critical head injuries. The investigation of the accident continues.

59-year-old Melinda Lawrence was driving home in Central City when she Jeff riding his bicycle. Lawrence followed Scott into the back parking lot of the Dollar General Store hitting him and leaving the scene with Scott's bicycle trailer pinned under her car. She didn't call for help or try to render aid before leaving. The deputy reported smelling alcoholic beverage coming from Lawrence's car and then asked her about the damage her car had. Witnesses called 911 to report an unresponsive man behind the Dollar General Store. An investigation found Lawrence was operating a vehicle while under the influence with a blood alcohol level of 0.168 and willfully hit Jeff with the intent to commit an assault with a deadly weapon. The investigation also found Lawrence left the scene intentionally knowing Scott had been hit and injured. Lawrence has been arrested and charged with Murder 1st, Homicide by Vehicle, and Leaving the Scene of a Fatality Accident.

31-year-old Eugene Harding received multiple head injuries in the crash after he was struck by a car Wednesday evening around 6:20pm. The driver, Nicole Andreesen, 32, of Waverly, told police she was headed east on Broadway Street and had reached down to get a cigarette. When she looked back up, the bicyclist was in the middle of the roadway and was unable to stop in time, she told police. Eugene died 3 days later from head injuries. The driver was charged with steering too close to a bicyclist. The charge is a simple misdemeanor and is punishable by up to a year in jail and a $250 fine.

David, was riding a bicycle north on Brady Street in Davenport when he was struck from behind by 34 year old Marcus Shaw whose vehicle had with no plates. Shaw fled the scene and was caught after a high-speed chase and running stop signs in a residential area. A witness in one of the vehicles said they were “joy riding” on Brady Street and swerved across all four lanes of traffic. Speed surveys done from videos confirmed their speeds were are high as 72 mph blocks from the crash site. Shaw had already served 7 years in prison for shooting a 17 year old in 2012. Shaw, 34, pleaded guilty to homicide by vehicle-drag racing, a Class D felony, and failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious injury, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in prison.

While training for an Ironman race Dr. Deming was riding in what's called a “pace line” just north of Altoona. Riders line up single file with only an inch between their tires in order to draft off the leader. Deming says his group was hitting speeds of up to 28 miles per hour. The man in front of him tapped tires with a rider two bikes up. The rider crashed, and Deming didn't have time to react. Deming says he ran over the guy and he got vaulted off his bike and he went down a lawn dart on his head. Deming lost consciousness. He says luckily a Mercy neurosurgeon was riding behind him and avoided the crash. The fellow doctor made sure Deming was positioned correctly and instructed a rider to call 911. When he awoke at the hospital he found out he suffered a fractured clavicle, scapula, several fractured ribs, a punctured lung, and a concussion. Deming is the founder of Above and Beyond Cancer and is recovering well.

Connie was hit at about 6:05 a.m. Monday morning on Highway 218 just north of Washburn as both the bike rider and the vehicle were headed southbound. she was pronounced dead at the Covenant Medical Center shortly after the crash. The vehicle was driven by Joshua Summerhays, 39, of Waterloo. Police investigated for 3 months and showed Summerhays was “distracted by an electronic device at the time of the accident.” Summerhays was also under the influence of methamphetamine, opiates, and benzodiazepines at the time of the crash. He was charged with vehicular homicide in Oct 2018 and was sentanced to 50 years in prison on March 12th 2019. His sentance was 25 years each for charges of homicide by vehicle and conspiracy to deliver meth following a plea. Both sentences were stacked consecutively for a total of 50 years behind bars. He was also ordered to pay $150,000 in restitution to Inks’ estate, and fined $5,000 plus costs and surcharges for the meth charge. He must serve about eight years in prison on the drug charge before he will be eligible for parole. Connie was a Sumner native and a longtime cyclist, rower and tri-athlete and had earned about 90 medals in the sports as of 2005, winning the Iowa Games and other competitions. She was also one of the top female rowers in the country in the 2000s.

Rob was commuting home from work and biking westbound on Urbandale Avenue in the bike lane. The car was northbound on 56th Street and pulled out from a stop sign in front of Rob. Rob was unable to stop before hitting the vehicle and beaking his collarbone and transported to the hospital. It was dark, but the roadway was lit and Rob had his lights on. The driver drove away and has not been found. The case is still open.

A boy was riding his bicycle down a hill on 21st Street eastbound and entered the road in front of a pickup traveling northbound on Grandview Boulevard at 8 p.m. The boy and the bike were thrown several feet in the air after the collision. Police said the boy was in serious condition and rushed to a local hospital. His name was not released. The accident remains under investigation.

Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member and industry pioneer Darryl Hensley, 79, known as "The Mad Hatter", died after colliding with a car while riding his bike as part of the Bike Burlington Dinner Ride on Wednesday evening. Hashim, 13, of Johnston was riding his bike with two other children near Northwest 66th Avenue and Merle Hay Road in Johnston when he was struck by a vehicle heading southbound on Merle Hay before 6 p.m. He was transported to a hospital in Des Moines and later died. Hashim was a middle-school student. Matthew Scott Nielsen, 36, of Granger was the driver of the truck, according to the police. He stayed on the scene. Preliminary investigations have determined neither drugs or alcohol were a factor in this accident.

Deputies say Kaitlyn was riding on a grassy, hilly area when she lost control and fell. Kaitlyn was showing her family a trick and lost control of the bike, rolling over the handle bars, getting jabbed in the abdomen. The force itself caused severe injuries including a lacerated liver. Emergency crews found Toby unresponsive on the ground after falling from his bike. Witnesses report that he had been riding south on State Street and lost control of his bicycle and fell off. No vehicles or other bicycles were involved. An air ambulance took Freese to University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics with life-threatening injuries. Freese was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Franklin Dahn, 70, of Lake Mills, was riding his bicycle in rural Johnson County around 1:30 p.m. down a hill in the 2300 block of Sugar Bottom Road when he struck an animal and crashed. Dahn was flown to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and later died from his injuries. Dahn was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Council Bluffs police were called out to the area of South 13th and 6th Avenue around 4 a.m. Wednesday. When they arrived on scene, they found a man lying on the curb with a bicycle. The driver left the scene of the crash. Police said the evidence is consistent with the bicycle being hit from behind by a vehicle while it was traveling south. The injured man was taken to CHI Creighton with head trauma.

The Iowa State Patrol says 8-year old Cassandra Rieken of Monticello was riding a tricycle on West Washington Street when it collided with the front of a van that was headed down South Cedar Street. Rieken died from her injuries. The driver, 27-year old April Covel of Monticello, and a passenger in her van were not injured. no word if any citations were filed.

She was life-flighted to Iowa City and has a long road of recovery ahead. It was dakr and raining when the cyclist was hit under a street light. Pre-Approved Auto's surveillance camera caught the crash on video, but it was dark and rainy. Pre-Approved Auto offered a $1000 reward.

Police say a 56-year-old woman rode her bike into a moving car at 5:58pm Sunday. Police say the woman fell and hit her head on the concrete causing a head injury. According to witnesses, the female bicyclist was riding in the area when she and the car collided. Police say the woman was taken to the hospital and is suffering non-life threatening injuries.

Steven was riding a bicycle along Highway 10 near Mill Creek State Park when he turned to cross Highway 10, and rode into the path of an eastbound 2006 Chevy Equinox driven by 19-year old Alyssa Kenney of Primghar. Troopers say Kenney swerved into oncoming traffic to avoid hitting Louscher, but was unable to do so. Louscher was dead on arrival at the Sioux City hospital.

The driver exited Hy-Vee at the main driveway, headed west, and realized they forgot something before turning into the west driveway where they hit me on the trail. They said they did not see me. the cyclist was heading east on the sidewalk along Euclid Avenue. At the same time a Waste Management garbage truck was about to make a turn southbound onto Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. He fell beneath the truck and it appeared that the rear wheels rolled over him. Parizek said the truck driver likely won't be charged since he had the right of way. The cyclist wasn't crossing at a crosswalk.

Jared was halfway through a 3,000-mile bicycle ride across the U.S. to raise money for a charity when a collision Thursday injured him badly and ended his trek. Police have charged a pickup truck driver with hitting and seriously injuring a Florida bicyclist who was camping after riding in RAGBRAI. The pickup struck a tent, dragging James who was inside. Danny Cardin, 55, of Homer, Louisiana, was charged with serious injury by vehicle and leaving the scene of a serious injury crash *** UPDATE April 24th 2018 *** Foley spent nearly two months in the Omaha hospital before returning to Florida to rehabilitate. A Iowa native was killed in a hit and run crash in Boulder Colorado when a 2015 Dodge Durango entered the bicycle lane he was riding in at about 5:15 p.m. His crumpled bicycle remained in the bicycle lane as police investigated on Saturday evening. The driver was identified as 24-year-old Callie Kuhasz, of Boulder. She left the scene but was located taken into custody. Alcohol and speed are being considered as factors. 28-year-old Ryan McKillip of West Liberty was traveling south on Davis Ave approx. 9:40 am in a 2000 Pontiac Bonneville when he hit Kuhn who also was southbound on Davis Avenue. Kuhn was taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead from the injuries. Mar 31 2017 - Ryan Scott McKillip was charged with vehicular homicide by reckless driving. According to the criminal complaint, McKillip was driving 10 mph over the 55 mph speed limit on the morning of June 25 when he encountered Kuhn on a rural two-lane county highway near West Liberty. Investigators determined McKillip steered unreasonably close to Kuhn, making an unsafe pass as the two entered a no-passing zone, according to the report.

Bob was hit from behind on County Road T64 in rural Floyd County between Nashua and Charles City. Todd Schriever, 50, of Marble Rock was driving the pickup truck who hit Philips. Philips was training for his first RAGBRAI that he was going ot do with his daughter. Philips was flown to Floyd County Memorial Hospital but died of his injuries. officers first responded to the area near the Skunk River Bridge at around 9:14 pm on Wednesday to a report of a car-bicycle accident. Upon arrival, they found the male bike rider, dead. An investigation revealed that both the vehicle and the bicyclist were northbound on Highway 61 when the car struck the bike from behind, throwing the rider from the bike. The rider was riding in the right lane of the highway, not wearing reflectors and had dark clothing on when he was struck.
