A Davenport man riding a bicycle led police on a chase Monday after a domestic disturbance call and was hit by one of the responding officer's squad cars. Cody Timm, 33, reportedly violated an order of protection and was harassing a resident just after 8 a.m. Timm fled the scene on a bicycle as officers arrived, the statement said, riding through alleys and yards. A squad car tried to stop in front of Timm as he rode near the intersection of Rockingham Road and Elsie Avenue, according to the statement. The car "slid and left the roadway" striking the bicycle, the statement said. Timm landed on the hood of the squad car and was taken to a nearby hospital for minor injuries. Timm is being charged with a violation of a protection order, possession of methamphetamines, possession of drug paraphernalia and interference with official acts.

The driver of a vehicle was heading westbound on Kimberly Road in Davenport and was approaching the intersection with Elsie Avenue when they hit a bicyclist aroudn 5:15pm. Police say the cyclist was trying to cross the road northbound against the red light. The cyclist was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The cyclist was cited for a red light violation. Both the bicycle and car were damaged in the accident.

Around 3:40 a.m. a semi driven by a 62 year old Dennis Gjerde of McCallsburg was traveling northbound on Highway 65 near Sheffield when he hit a bicyclist in the same lane. Carrie, 27, sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, via air ambulance. The driver was not injured. No other details.

Joseph Mann was struck and killed by a car his bicycle at 4:48 p.m. at 140th St. and Moscow Road in rural Muscatine County. Mann was traveling southbound when he was struck from behind by Timothy Lee Miller, 59, of Muscatine. Mann was a multi-year competitor for RAAM, he raced Trans Iowa many years, rode several RAGBRAIs, he crewed for Sarah Cooper at RAAM and was a member of the Melon City Bike Club. The crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.

57-year-old Kent Eugene Harfst was participating in the Ride Across Iowa in a Day (RAID) bicycle ride when 19-year-old Aaron Joshua Albert of Mondamin was heading eastbound on county road D12 and struck Keny from behind around 6:35 a.m. near the top of a hill and in dark conditions. Harfst landed in the south ditch with critical injuries and was transported by air ambulance to MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Albert was uninjured in the crash.

Dilail Salkic, 22, of Waterloo died from injuries from a hit and run crash in Waterloo about 4pm in the area of Western Avenue and West Third Street. Witnesses reported seeing a yellow car collide with the bike, and officers discovered the Mitsubishi parked vacant at Western and West Second street. The passenger side of the car’s windshield was caved in. Police arrested 42 year old L.A. Jefferson and charged him with leaving the scene of a serious injury accident, and his bond was set at $100,000.

Jim Stoffer died from injuries sustained on a July 10 biking accident on Forest Grove Drive in Bettendorf around 7:30 pm. Police initually suspected a medical event had caused him to lose control. The autopsy ruled out a medical problem, and the death was declared an accident. The cause of death was massive head trauma. There were no signs of a hit and run, no signs of getting clipped. the bike scratches and markings gave no indication of foul-play, but the injuries sustained seemed way more than a simple fall. Charles Fluharty, 64, of Sioux City was crossing an intersection not far from the Hard Rock Casino Battery Park when a pickup collided with the cyclist. Police say the truck dragged the cyclist for 10 to 15 feet before stopping. Edy Guevara was arrested in December on two counts of vehicular homicide. He is being held on a $30,000 bond. Guevara, 37, had alcohol and marijuana in his system at the time he struck Charles Fluharty on his bicycle on June 13 at the intersection of Wesley Parkway and Kansas Street. Guevara later told police he was texting on his phone at the time of the collision. Video surveillance footage obtained showed Guevara striking Fluharty. Guevara accelerated and drug Fluharty an estimated 66 feet before stopping. Guevara had a green light with a yield to traffic on his left turn.

Charles “Tom” Bridge, 67 of Omaha NE was riding the Sauk Rail Trail from Lake View to Breda and collapsed near the Trailside Inn in Carnarvon with a heart attack. Emergency responders took Bridge to a Hospital in Lake City, where he was pronounced dead. “He passed away ... while doing something he loved with people that he loved, cycling in Iowa,” Bridge’s obituary says. He was an outlaw, a cowboy, a genuine soul who surrounded himself with friends of the highest quality and character, a family man who lived selflessly yet selfishly enough to feed his inquisitive soul.

According a family friend, a motorist ran a red light and struck Hubbell on Friday. Hubbell has undergone two different surgeries for a broken pelvis. An unidentified female critically injured in a traffic accident near Kanesville and Main in Council Bluffs around 10:30am on a Tuesday morning. Police say the bicyclist was northbound on the sidewalk at the intersection. North and southbound traffic had a green light. Kathryn Anderson, 19, of Council Bluffs, was southbound and turning east onto Kanesville Blvd. As she made her turn, she did not see the bicyclist crossing the road and they collided. Investigators said Anderson had the green light, but aren't sure if the bicyclist had a walk or don't walk signal. The bicyclist was taken to the hospital for treatment of critical head injuries. The investigation of the accident continues.

Gary Long, 70, was killed around 8:30am on a roadway west of Estherville in Dickinson County. A van, driven by 36-year-old Kory Doll of Estherville, hit Gary who was in the roadway next his bicycle. The report states another vehicle in front of Doll obstructed his view. He swerved in an attempt to avoid the collision, but was unable to avoid striking Long, who died at the scene.

Kevin Sean Zehnder, was traveling on a bicycle near the intersection of North Blossom and 3rd Streets at approximately 7 p.m. Zehnder entered the intersection and was struck by 33-year-old Adam Babcock of Sac City, who was operating the pickup truck. Zehnder was transported to Loring Hospital and was later airlifted to a Des Moines hospital with life-threatening injuries. Lake View Chief of Police said an investigation into the accident is ongoing.

59-year-old Melinda Lawrence was driving home in Central City when she Jeff riding his bicycle. Lawrence followed Scott into the back parking lot of the Dollar General Store hitting him and leaving the scene with Scott's bicycle trailer pinned under her car. She didn't call for help or try to render aid before leaving. The deputy reported smelling alcoholic beverage coming from Lawrence's car and then asked her about the damage her car had. Witnesses called 911 to report an unresponsive man behind the Dollar General Store. An investigation found Lawrence was operating a vehicle while under the influence with a blood alcohol level of 0.168 and willfully hit Jeff with the intent to commit an assault with a deadly weapon. The investigation also found Lawrence left the scene intentionally knowing Scott had been hit and injured. Lawrence has been arrested and charged with Murder 1st, Homicide by Vehicle, and Leaving the Scene of a Fatality Accident. Update Jan 2020 - Melinda Lawrence was originally charged with first-degree murder, homicide by vehicle and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. According to the plea deal, she plead guilty to vehicular homicide while armed with a dangerous weapon. Lawrence faces up to 40 years in prison

As the cyclist crossed, he did not see the other vehicle heading north on 36th Avenue. The teenager was transported by ambulance to the local hospital, where he underwent surgery. 31-year-old Eugene Harding received multiple head injuries in the crash after he was struck by a car Wednesday evening around 6:20pm. The driver, Nicole Andreesen, 32, of Waverly, told police she was headed east on Broadway Street and had reached down to get a cigarette. When she looked back up, the bicyclist was in the middle of the roadway and was unable to stop in time, she told police. Eugene died 3 days later from head injuries. The driver was charged with steering too close to a bicyclist. The charge is a simple misdemeanor and is punishable by up to a year in jail and a $250 fine.

A 14 year old boy said he was riding his bike eastbound on the sidewalk south of Boyson Road NE when he crossed an intersection on the sidewalk. he saw a black SUV, with a possibly white female with blonde hair driving come up to the stop sign and stop and then proceeded to drive forward. The boy said he was hit by the center of the front bumper and grill area before he tumbled onto the top of the hood. He was then thrown forward off the bike. The boy said the SUV backed up while he picked up the items that he dropped and then the woman driving the SUV drove off.

David, was riding a bicycle north on Brady Street in Davenport when he was struck from behind by 34 year old Marcus Shaw whose vehicle had with no plates. Shaw fled the scene and was caught after a high-speed chase and running stop signs in a residential area. A witness in one of the vehicles said they were “joy riding” on Brady Street and swerved across all four lanes of traffic. Speed surveys done from videos confirmed their speeds were are high as 72 mph blocks from the crash site. Shaw had already served 7 years in prison for shooting a 17 year old in 2012. Shaw, 34, pleaded guilty to homicide by vehicle-drag racing, a Class D felony, and failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious injury, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in prison.

Witnesses told police that a full-size, sport utility vehicle struck 56-year-old Darrel Ford on his bicycle at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and Woodland Avenue at 1am. The SUV driver fled the scene, traveling south on MLK. Ford, of Des Moines,was transported to a hospital, where he died. Anthony J. McGilvrey was the last known driver.

While training for an Ironman race Dr. Deming was riding in what's called a “pace line” just north of Altoona. Riders line up single file with only an inch between their tires in order to draft off the leader. Deming says his group was hitting speeds of up to 28 miles per hour. The man in front of him tapped tires with a rider two bikes up. The rider crashed, and Deming didn't have time to react. Deming says he ran over the guy and he got vaulted off his bike and he went down a lawn dart on his head. Deming lost consciousness. He says luckily a Mercy neurosurgeon was riding behind him and avoided the crash. The fellow doctor made sure Deming was positioned correctly and instructed a rider to call 911. When he awoke at the hospital he found out he suffered a fractured clavicle, scapula, several fractured ribs, a punctured lung, and a concussion. Deming is the founder of Above and Beyond Cancer and is recovering well.

The driver, 55-year-old Kerri Gamerdinger, was driving northbound and didn't see the bike until the last minute because her lights were dim. Connie was hit at about 6:05 a.m. Monday morning on Highway 218 just north of Washburn as both the bike rider and the vehicle were headed southbound. she was pronounced dead at the Covenant Medical Center shortly after the crash. The vehicle was driven by Joshua Summerhays, 39, of Waterloo. Police investigated for 3 months and showed Summerhays was “distracted by an electronic device at the time of the accident.” Summerhays was also under the influence of methamphetamine, opiates, and benzodiazepines at the time of the crash. He was charged with vehicular homicide in Oct 2018 and was sentanced to 50 years in prison on March 12th 2019. His sentance was 25 years each for charges of homicide by vehicle and conspiracy to deliver meth following a plea. Both sentences were stacked consecutively for a total of 50 years behind bars. He was also ordered to pay $150,000 in restitution to Inks’ estate, and fined $5,000 plus costs and surcharges for the meth charge. He must serve about eight years in prison on the drug charge before he will be eligible for parole. Connie was a Sumner native and a longtime cyclist, rower and tri-athlete and had earned about 90 medals in the sports as of 2005, winning the Iowa Games and other competitions. She was also one of the top female rowers in the country in the 2000s.

Authorities were called to the incident around 1:10am Saturday morning. Judith Beason of Oelwein was driving a 2003 Pontiac Sunfire when she hit the bike.
