What is RAGBRAI?
RAGBRAI, the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, is the world’s oldest, largest, and longest bicycle touring event. This seven-day ride, celebrating 50+ years, attracts cyclists from all over the world to traverse Iowa from the Missouri River on the west to the Mississippi River on the east.
What started in 1973 as a small ride by two Des Moines Register columnists has now grown into an Iowa tradition, bringing thousands of riders and volunteers together. Every year, communities across the state open their doors to RAGBRAI participants, offering legendary hospitality that has made the event famous.
RAGBRAI is a non-competitive, recreational ride, not a race, and participants ride at their own risk. The route averages 468 miles, offering diverse terrain and scenic views. While the route changes each year, RAGBRAI consistently showcases the best of Iowa’s charm, and it’s a ride like no other.
Riders must be registered, and the number of participants is limited to ensure safety, as guided by the Iowa State Patrol and the Iowa Department of Transportation. The overnight towns are announced in January, and riders are encouraged to follow application procedures to join the event.
Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or a first-time rider, RAGBRAI offers a chance to experience Iowa’s beauty, hospitality, and camaraderie. Come pedal across Iowa and be part of this legendary cycling adventure!
