For Nicolet Law Accident & Injury Attorneys, sponsoring BIKEIOWA was a no-brainer. If you’re involved in Iowa’s cycling community, you’ve probably heard about BIKEIOWA. It’s the place to go to find the perfect trail, upcoming races—grassroots or otherwise-- catch up on cycling news, and more. Nicolet Law Accident & Injury Attorneys, we aren’t just committed to representing injured cyclists. We’re also invested in building relationships and forging friendships on the trails.
We Have A Special Connection To Iowa
Our resident attorney, Dubuque native, and cycling aficionado Christopher Welch has made countless memories across Iowa and the Midwest. From the nighttime views of the High Trestle Trail to the communal thrill of RAGBRAI, his experiences only continue to fuel his passion. Cycling hasn’t just given him incredible memories; it gave him an unexpected gift too. In 2017, while taking the Heritage Trail through Farley, Iowa, an injured dog ran out from the woods by the trail.
Christopher Welch opened his heart and gave Farley (how could you not name him that?) a new home. Farley comes along for the ride to Nicolet Law’s Minneapolis office from time to time, much to the delight of the office staff and Farley too.
Chris' Bio
How An Accident Changed Everything
Christopher Welch also has firsthand experience of how traumatizing cycling accidents can be. In 2018 a distracted driver cut his bike commute short when she swerved into him and he lost consciousness.
When he regained consciousness, he realized that the left side of his body was numb. With the waiting time for an ambulance unknown, one of his friends rushed him to the ER. In a state of shock, he sat in the ER, covered in blood, still wearing his bike gear.
He had no idea where his bike was, what recovery would look like, or if he would ever ride again. While he had to step back from cycling, the community did not forget him. RAGBRAI honored him in their annual Ride of Silence, commemorating injured and fallen cyclists. At the time, Christopher Welch was a public defender in Colorado, protecting citizens against accusations from the government and large insurance companies. However, his accident experience inspired him to switch his focus to personal injury law, with a focus on cycling accidents.
His firsthand experience and cultural knowledge make him uniquely equipped to handle cycling injury cases. He knows how much money cyclists invest in their bike alone, not to mention any specialized gear. He also stays up to date with how cycling accident laws differ in Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Dakota. In a recent case, he took his bike and a GoPro camera down to where his client had been injured. The insurance company was refusing to budge, so he rode the trail himself, capturing compelling footage for his client. While Nicolet Law Accident & Injury Attorneys have developed a reputation as the Midwest Cycling Lawyers™, for many, Christopher Welch is seen as the “face” of the brand.
We Know There’s A Lot At Stake
At Nicolet Law, we know that no one wants to consider that they may get injured at some point. The unfortunate reality is the more you ride, the higher the risk. While cyclists tend to be in better shape, the injuries that come with cycling accidents tend to be more severe. That can mean extensive medical bills, lost wages, and the general emotional toll of recovery. Even if you aren’t injured, there’s a good chance you may be the one driving a friend to the ER. When we take on a new client, we do a deep dive into the details of their accident and injury so we can evaluate how drastically it has changed their life.
