Des Moines' Tyson Wieland began racing with the Z3 Triathlon Team while swimming and running at Johnston High School. Since then, and after running the Steeplechase and 5,000m at West Texas University, he turned pro, racing in sprint, Olympic and 70.3 triathlons.
Bike Talk with Dave podcast host Dave Mable talked with Wieland before tackling his first Ironman length triathlon (swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, run 26.2 miles), held on June 12 in Des Moines. In addition to learning about what it takes to prepare for an 8+ hour day, Wieland and Mable also discuss the impact a race of this magnitude can have on it's host community and the people and businesses that benefit from an international event.

During the marathon leg of the event, Wieland's race was not going as he'd hoped. While watching and cheering, Mable asked if Wieland would mind if he joined him for a bit and talk about his race. He was kind enough, and of sound mind enough, to invite Mable along for a mile or so. What you'll hear in this episode is the raw, unfiltered thoughts, feelings, excitement and challenges of a professional triathlete deep into his first Ironman.
