The Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office has identified the bicyclist who was killed in a collision northeast of Council Bluffs early Saturday.

William Shepard, 55, of Council Bluffs, was pronounced dead at a local hospital, officials said.

A man has come forward to report his possible involvement in the collision that killed Shepard.

"An individual came forward who thought they hit something, possibly a deer," Danker said. "(Deputies) found damage to the vehicle consistent with the accident. We don't have too much information and we are continuing the investigation."

The name of the man who came forward is being withheld pending outcome of the investigation, Danker said. His vehicle was seized as evidence.

The collision occurred at Old Lincoln Highway and Northline Drive just before 2:30 a.m. Deputies responding to the scene located Shepard, but the vehicle that hit him had left.

Danker said the man who came forward will be interviewed again to see if his story is consistent with what investigators learned at the scene.
