Press release submitted by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District

The City of Davenport's Riverfront Trail alongside the Iowa American Water Company's East River Station Treatment Plant will not reopen to public access for the Labor Day weekend due to the ongoing construction work required to complete the trail and its surroundings.

The construction of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers/City of Davenport flood risk management project remains on schedule and the concrete access road, which also serves as a portion of the Riverfront Trail, is complete. However, the placement of soil along the trail and sealing of concrete joints is ongoing. At this time, the trail's edges have vertical drop offs of approximately 10"-12", and in conjunction with open joints, the public use of the trail would pose a safety hazard.

Bicyclists, runners and walkers are reminded to stay off the trail as it remains an active work zone. The City of Davenport will open the trail to the public after all grading, sealing and any additional road/trail work is completed. The remaining work is anticipated to take an additional two to three weeks for completion.

The Corps recognizes the trail's importance to the community and the City of Davenport and is working to complete the trail as soon as possible.
