Per Jacob Oyen - President of the Iowa Bicycle Racing Association (IBRA)
#crossiscoming! But wait, we really need some help from the community.
We are in desperate need of more licensed officials. In central Iowa, we have five or so officials that regularly work races and in eastern Iowa, we are down to two officials that cover races. With a full season of ‘cross scheduled, this small crew will cover all of the events in the state and it is a lot for the small team. These folks also have other responsibilities with families, work, and other things that impact their availability. Some of our officials even like to dust off their own bikes and race a bit too.
How can you help? If you, or someone you know, is willing to become an official, take a look at the USAC officials website: https://usacycling.org/officials/how-to-become. Taking the entry-level officials course is the first step and if you’ve been to a bike race, you are well prepared for the open book test. We’d love to get you trained and apprentice at a few races to get a feel for what it is like.
Have some questions, shoot me a message, I’d love to answer them.
Cyclocross is arguably the best discipline to learn how to officiate races and the casual atmosphere makes for a great learning environment.
