A bill that extends protections to anyone using a crosswalk, not just pedestrians on foot, has passed the Iowa Senate and is on its way to the governor for her signature.
House File 2568 was approved unanimously by the Senate on Wednesday (April 10th) after passing out of the House earlier in the session. The bill closes a loophole in state law and extends protections to people using a crosswalk, whether they are walking, riding a bicycle, using a wheelchair or scooter, or a skateboard.
Luke Hoffman, executive director of the Iowa Bicycle Coalition, said the passage of the bill “is a clear and convincing victory for the individual rights of all Iowans. The bill … brings us in line with surrounding states, including Nebraska, which already affords the same protections to all pedestrians, regardless of your form of transportation.” He called the passage of the bill “a win for all Iowans.” “No matter if you are traveling in a car, by foot or by bike, your safety matters,” he said.
