At 7PM on Wednesday, the Ride of Silence will roll out from Central Park. This will be the eighth year for the Ride in Mason City and the tenth anniversary of the first event, organized in Dallas in ten days after a local cyclist was killed by the mirror of a passing bus and attended by 1,000 cyclists. It's grown each year with events in all fifty states, in twenty four countries and on seven continents. The Ride is led by a MCPD officer on a bike.
Motor vehicle deaths have declined since 2008, while the percentage of bicyclist and pedestrian fatalities has risen significantly during that time. Promotion of this event fits nicely in the Blue Zones Project's commitment to safe cycling.
