Bike Talk With Dave - Ep. 148 - Winter Riding Science with Scott Sumpter p/b Pogie Lites
At the time of this writing, snow squalls are cruising through central Iowa, leaving a fresh blanket of snow in their wake. That can only mean that fat bike season is officially open! Even if you’re not a fat biker, ripping through the woods and along the shorelines of area lakes, you might be still be enjoying the area paved trails or navigating traffic on your morning commute. Regardless of what type of riding you’re doing, the one thing we all have in common is the desire to stay warm.
It’s said, in the winter ultra world, that there is no bad weather, only bad clothing choices. And while this is true, the choices you make on your bike can matter just as much. The difference between an aluminum and carbon handlebar can be the difference between a joyful day on the bike, and a miserable one.
Scott Sumpter, a prolific fat biker who rides all winter long, discovered that difference and began to wonder “why?”. This led him down a rabbit hole of material science and thermal dynamics which all concluded with the publishing of his paper: “
Conduction Conduction, What’s Your Function”.
In wanting to explore this further, Bike Talk with Dave host, Dave Mable, sat down with Sumpter and dove into the science of winter riding. From handlebars to pedals, our bike is capable of sucking the heat right out of us, and Sumpter shares his findings to help us all stay a little warmer, ride a little longer and keep riding all year long.
