Where a brick factory once stood on Des Moines' north side, mountain bikers twist and turn through rocks, brush, trees and an occasional brick still lurking in the dirt.

“That’s where you went to go be stupid with your cars, that’s what I did there,” Rob Cook said with a laugh as he recalled his teenage years spent on theswath of land nestled in a crook of the Des Moines River just north of Euclid Avenue and east of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway.

“If you put a shovel into the dirt, you’re more likely to hit a brick than you are anything else,” hesaid.

Cook is president of the Central Iowa Trails Association and a lifelong Iowan who has dug his fair share of trail.

Formed in 1998 to build, maintain and advocate for mountain bike trails in central Iowa, CITA works with landowners to build trails across the metro.
