#FridayFives is a new series for Summer 2020 and we plan to share fun destinations, events and happenings each week.
For Week #9 it is:
1) RAGBRAI MEMORIES FROM SCOTT
Scott reflects on the fact that this is the day we would have loaded up to head west to Le Mars, Iowa for the RAGBRAI Expo.
He explains that BIKEIOWA has been a vendor on RAGBRAI since 2016 and have always enjoyed setting up an on-route oasis with Mr. Pork Chop and Iowa Beer Bus.
Then, it gets even more interesting when he remembers hisfirst RAGBRAI, back in 1996 - including a crushed KYBO in Schleswig.
2) RAGBRAI VIRTUALLY THE BEST
Next week is the last full week in July, so that means it's RAGBRAI week even if it is a global pandemic. RAGBRAI Director Dieter Drake may or may not phone in with an update and to remind everyone there's still time to register for RAGBRAI - Virtually the Best Bike Ride 2020!
Virtual RAGBRAI riders are encouraged to ride the same RAGBRAI mileage and climb as the ride would have had over the course of the next week.
RAGBRAI vendors would have been gathering in Le Mars tonight, but instead, we are eating Blue Bunny Ice Cream (Made in Le Mars).
3) RAGBRAI FOUNDERS STATUE
Earlier this week, the RAGBRAI Founders Statue: RAGBRAI: River to River was installed at Des Moines Water Works Park. That statue is 50' wide and includes two bronze figures representing RAGBRAI Founders John Karras and Don Kaul.
It's kind of crazy to think that RAGBRAI started because Karras and Kaul intended to ride their bikes across Iowa and wanted to figure out a way to get their employer (The Des Moines Register) to pay for it. The Register suggested they invite readers along, and here we are now, almost 50 years later!
4) CYCLOCROSS MOSTLY CANCELLED
Most of the Fall 2020 Iowa Cyclocross Season has been cancelled. With the pandemic, there are too many unknowns. There were 13 cyclocross races scheduled in Iowa. As of today (July 17) 5 have cancelled, 7 may happen and 1 is TBD.

5) GREEN PLAID & GEAR ON SALE
The 2020 BIKEIOWA Pre-Ordered Gear is arriving! Green Plaid Crew Shirts have arrived and all pre-orders have shipped. the ladies Green Plaid Gemini Tanks should ship within the next couple of weeks.
