Buena Vista County is beginning preparations to replace its largest and most iconic bridge. The project may include a bike trail and could top $3 million.

A funding award of $514,000 was recently received through the regional planning authority, for the fiscal year 2021-22, a trigger to launch the project.

“We agreed to let the project within that window, although that doesn’t necessarily mean construction will be 100 percent completed,” Buena Vista County Engineer Bret Wilkinson said.

Construction will be a massive undertaking. The current bridge is 444 feet long and high over the Little Sioux River. A new project could approach a span of 500 feet.
