Iowa Great Places have been awarded $1.3 million in grants for projects in their communities.

This year, the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs received applications from 14 Iowa Great Places projects seeking more than $3 million.

Funding for the Iowa Great Places program is provided by an annual appropriation from the Iowa Legislature through the Rebuild Iowa Infrastructure Fund. The program is administered by the Iowa Arts Council, a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, in collaboration with the Iowa Great Places Citizens Advisory Board.

The bicycle-related award this year goes to:
Construction of a trail bridge in the Turkey River Recreational Corridor near Elgin. Grant award: $216,000.


Other Iowa Great Places grants announced Tuesday will support:

• Rebuilding of Cedar Covered Bridge in Madison County, one of six covered bridges near Winterset that are the centerpiece of the area’s tourism industry. Grant award: $275,770.

• Harvester II renovation project: $400,000.

• Redevelopment of the Wapsipinicon River Scenic Overlook in Linn County. Grant award: $400,000.

• Phase II development of Trestle Park in Manning. Grant award: $31,380.
