FIGHT CANCER, HAVE FUN AT THE 10TH ANNUAL COURAGE RIDE
If you’d like to make a difference in the fight against
cancer — and enjoy yourself at the same time — join the hundreds of cyclists
who turn out every year for The Courage Ride.
The Courage Ride is a cycling event held every year to raise
money for cancer research. This year the ride will be held Saturday, August 22,
starting at Iowa Mennonite School, 15 minutes southwest of Iowa City. You’ll
ride the rolling hills of the Amish countryside, along old stagecoach routes
and past Amish farmsteads.
Proceeds from the ride are donated to the Holden
Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics to
benefit sarcoma cancer research. The Courage Ride has raised over $250,000
in ten short years.
The 10th Annual Courage Ride was started in 2005 to honor
the memory of Seth Bailey. Seth was a junior at Iowa Mennonite High School when
he was diagnosed with soft-tissue synovial sarcoma cancer. His leg was
amputated, but Seth battled back and, fitted with a prosthesis, played
basketball his senior year. Seth continued his fight and was training for a
spot on the US paralympic team when he eventually lost his battle in 2003.
Cyclists of any skill level will find a route to suit them.
Choose from six different routes on paved surfaces — 16, 24, 37, 59, 86 or 110
miles in length. New in 2015 are five different routes that follow gravel roads
— 20, 42, 62, 84 and 105 miles in length.
Registration is $60 for adults ($75 after Aug. 15), $15 for
children 13-17, 12 and under are free. Your registration includes breakfast and
lunch catered by the Coralville Hy-Vee, live music all day at Iowa Mennonite
School, rest stops (the Courage Ride is known for its unique and entertaining
rest stops), SAG support and hot showers.
