Transportation panel funds projects
The Iowa Transportation Commission on Tuesday awarded more than $2.8 million for infrastructure projects.
Gov. Chet Culver used the action to underscore the need for his proposed $700 million bonding plan known as the Rebuild Iowa Infrastructure initiative.
The money goes to several projects:
• Up to $880,000 for construction of new public transit facilities in Coralville to replace facilities destroyed last summer by flooding.
• Up to $369,494 to Ottumwa for road improvements in the city's airport industrial park to provide access to a proposed U.S. Job Corps Center for economically disadvantaged young people ages 16-24.
• Up to $443,532 to Denison for road improvements to provide access to a proposed 40-acre professional office park near U.S. Highway 59.
• About $1.2 million to support recreational trail programs. This includes $226,526 for the Clear Creek Trail in Coralville and $233,679 for the Copper Creek Trail in Jackson County. In addition, this provides money for off-highway vehicle park renovation projects, Iowa Department of Natural Resources/AmeriCorps trails, and snowmobile trail-grooming equipment.
