Due to washouts caused by flooding, the Great Western Trail is closed until further notice. [UPDATED 6/6 4:25 p.m. - the washouts are between Mckinley and Hwy 28. You can still get around the closed section of the trail by hanging a left on the airport access road and taking the first right, which swings back to the trail. note this is gravel... but it will get you around the bridge andwashed out areas ~ per trail rider] Trailheads are located across from the Izaak Walton League on Valley Drive in Des Moines and at Inwood Street in Martensdale (Warren County). Updates can be obtained from the Polk County Conservation Board at (515) 323-5300.
