The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) is receiving a $10,000 grant from the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) to support its comprehensive cancer control program. IDPH is one of 27 community, non-profit organizations across the country to receive LAF grants to help people with the physical, emotional and practical challenges of cancer. The LAF grant will allow IDPH to take a comprehensive, statewide look at cancer survivorship by broadening the network of cancer stakeholders, conducting a statewide assessment of survivorship activities and developing a plan to address gaps and unidentified needs. “More than half of the Iowans diagnosed with cancer each year survive and each year the number of cancer survivors continues to grow,” said IDPH Director Mary Mincer Hansen, R.N., Ph.D. “With the resources provided by the Lance Armstrong Foundation grant, there will be improved communication and coordination of cancer survivorship in the state. We are excited and honored to be recognized as a member of such an extraordinary group of recipients who all share a passion for helping people affected by cancer.” The LAF awarded grants in five areas: practical issues of cancer survivorship; cancer pain, palliative and end-of-life care; physical activity and nutrition; survivorship education; and emotional support for people living with cancer. Each grant recipient completed a rigorous application process, and proposals were reviewed by a selection committee comprised of cancer survivors and cancer community experts and advisors. The LAF inspires and empowers people affected by cancer. The LAF also helps people with cancer focus on living and believes that unity is strength, knowledge is power and attitude is everything. From the moment of diagnosis, the LAF provides the practical information and tools people with cancer need to live life on their own terms. The LAF serves its mission through advocacy, public health and research. Founded in 1997 by cancer survivor and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong, the LAF is located in Austin, Texas.
