The Urban Bicycle Food Mission pedals hundreds of free, hot meals to Dubuque residents in need every Sunday.

“It’s one of the most basic needs,” says UBFM Director of Operations Tim Leonard.

The weekly fight against food insecurity starts at 3 pm. Aided by a small band of volunteers, his goal is to feed more than 200 people weekly. Accomplishing the mission takes fruit, oatmeal, sandwiches, cookies, and at least 10 pounds of ground beef for burritos.

Around 4 pm, the mission’s volunteers wheel out the fresh meals in front of the Dubuque Rescue Mission for anyone in need. Leonard says it’s about helping deliver one of the most basic needs, but also about building community.

“A meal is something that we can do together,” says Leonard. “We can gather and prepare a meal. It’s something we’re very capable of doing.”

Bicycles are fitted with safely wrapped burritos and sandwiches around.
