Bike lanes are being planned for areas around Urbandale High School, on Aurora Avenue between 70th and 86th Street(s), and also on 70th between Aurora and Hickman.
"We try to look at ways we can make roadways better accessible for all users, not just vehicles" said Kristin Brostrom, Assistant Director of Engineering for the City of Urbandale, "pedestrians, bicyclists, multi-mode transportation."
Brostrom says the idea was first proposed as part of the 2019 Complete Streets Master Plan, which implemented ways for more people to travel.
"The traffic volumes on both those streets are really far lower than you need both lanes for," she said, "more than double the capacity you need for both lanes that are out there."
A second public informational meeting is being held Tuesday night at 6 p.m, at Urbandale City Hall, 3600 86th Street (corner of 86th and Douglas).
More details about the Complete Streets program, including presentation slides, can be found at the City of Urbandale's website.
