This year's RAGBRAI, which concluded Sunday, was a success.

“It was better than expected,” race director Matt Phippen said. “In fact, there was talk among riders that this was the best ever.”

Some 25,000 people, including support staff, took part this year in this annual bike ride event across Iowa that began 51 years ago by The Des Moines Register.

Riders came from all over the country, as well as 20 foreign countries, Phippen told The Nonpareil on Monday.

“That’s very common,” he said.

During this weeklong ride, eight communities served as overnight sites, including Red Oak in southwest Iowa.

All of the communities, including breakfast stops, did a great job in welcoming these riders, Phippen said. The weather was also accommodating.
