Plans for a roughly mile and half extension of a multi-use trail in western Shelby County have received a significant financial boost.
The Iowa Department of Transportation recently announced over $2.7 million for seven projects through the State Recreational Trails Program. Among the recipients was phase two of the Ballpark to Ballpark Shelby County Trail for nearly $463,000. Robert Mortenson is the President of the Shelby County Trails Board. Mortenson tells KMA News they are grateful to receive the contribution but notes they have a little way to go to meet their over $900,000 estimate for the project.
"We have roughly $200,000 on hand right now in cash, so we're looking basically at $650,000 and then we're looking at the project costing roughly $900,000," said Mortenson. "So, we do have a significant shortfall at this time, but we will fill that gap."
