In this special BIKEIOWA feature, we dig into each town’s personality—its attractions, historical roots, notable names, and a few fun or funky facts you might not catch from the saddle. So tighten your cleats, grab a slice of rhubarb pie, and let’s roll through the stories behind the stops.

This year’s route takes us through a fresh set of small towns and river cities, where you’ll find everything from historic train depots and quirky festivals to local legends and pie contests that draw as many fans as the food trucks. Whether you’re pedaling for the miles or the memories, these towns are ready to welcome you with open arms and a heaping helping of hometown pride.

** DAY 1 **

1. Orange City, IA (Start Town)

  • Population: 6,267

  • County: Sioux

  • Founded: 1870 (by settlers from Pella IA who were seeking better and more affordable land)

Attractions:

  1. Orange City Tulip Festival – A world-famous Dutch festival that began in 1936, featuring wooden shoe dancing, Dutch foods, and elaborate parades happening in May each year.

  2. Windmill Park – Home to a full-size working Dutch windmill and beautiful tulip gardens.

  3. Dutch Storefronts & Molenaar Park – The downtown area resembles a traditional Dutch village.

Historical Facts:

  1. Named after William of Orange, a Dutch royal family, specifically the House of Orange.

  2. Founded by Dutch immigrants seeking religious and economic freedom in the U.S.

  3. Home to Northwestern College, founded in 1882 as a Christian liberal arts school.

  • Gerrit J. Diekema – U.S. Congressman and diplomat to the Netherlands.

  • Robert Schuller – Known as a televangelist and founder of the Crystal Cathedral, Schuller has ties to the Reformed Church in America.

  1. No fast food chains downtown! The city prefers small businesses over major chains.

  2. Bikes are popular year-round! The city has an extensive biking community, even in winter.

  3. Dutch letters (pastries) are a must-try! Almost every bakery in town serves these sweet, flaky treats.


2. Granville, IA

  • Population: 310

  • County: Sioux

  • Founded: 1882

Attractions:

  1. St. Joseph's Catholic Church – A stunning historic church with European-style architecture.

  2. Spalding Park & School – Former Catholic school with a strong community presence.

  3. Veterans Memorial Park – A peaceful spot honoring local military members.

Historical Facts:

  1. Granville was platted in 1882 and named for Richard Grenville, an English explorer.

  2. Settled by German and Irish immigrants in the late 1800s.

  3. Once had a grist mill, which is used to turn wheat into flour, making it an important agricultural hub.

Fun Facts:

  1. Granville is famous for its community spirit! Nearly every resident is involved in a local event or organization.

  2. The entire town supports RAGBRAI! They throw one of the best roadside parties for cyclists.

  3. The town is known for its homemade pies! Look for them at bake sales and church fundraisers.


3. Primghar, IA

  • Population: 965

  • County: O'Brien

  • Founded: 1872

Attractions:

  1. O'Brien County Courthouse – Built in 1915, showcasing Beaux-Arts architecture.

  2. Primghar Golf & Country Club – A scenic 9-hole golf course.

  3. Primghar City Park – A lovely green space with picnic areas and playgrounds.

Historical Facts:

  1. The name "Primghar" is an acronym from the initials of its eight founders.
    Pumphrey, Roberts, Irwin, McNally, Green, Hayes ,Abbott, Robinson

  2. Became the county seat of O’Brien County in 1872. 307 votes were enough to relocate form "old O'Brien" aka the Moding Farm.

  3. Hosts the annual "Cobblestone Days" festival, a celebration of local history.

Notable People:

  • Joseph N. Welch (1890–1960): An attorney best known for his role as special counsel to the United States Army during the Army-McCarthy hearings in 1954. He gained national recognition for his pointed questioning of Senator Joseph McCarthy, notably asking, "Have you no sense of decency, sir?" Welch was born in Primghar.

  • Keli McGregor (1963–2010): A former NFL player who later became the president of the Colorado Rockies baseball team. McGregor was born in Primghar and went on to have a distinguished career in professional sports.

  • Rick and Michael Mast: Brothers who founded Mast Brothers chocolate in 2007, known for their artisanal approach to chocolate-making. They spent part of their early years in Primghar, which influenced their later business endeavors.

  1. It has the only town name of its kind in the world! Nowhere else is named Primghar.

  2. The Primghar Jaycees Figure 8 Races are a summer event in Primghar, Iowa, featuring a novelty race where cars tow trailers in a figure-8 pattern, with the goal of dislodging other competitors' trailers
  3. A town built on a bet! The town’s founders wagered that Primghar would become the county seat—and they won. (we "think" this is true)


4. Hartley, IA (Meeting Town)

  • Population: 1,570

  • County: O'Brien

  • Founded: 1879

Attractions:

  1. Patch-Eeten House Museum: Hartley is home to the Patch-Eeten House Museum, a restored 1890s Queen Anne style residence. This museum features a military exhibit focusing on World War II, showcasing photographs of Hartley veterans and related memorabilia.

  2. Summerfest Celebration: Each year, during the first weekend in August, Hartley hosts "Summerfest," an annual community event that brings residents and visitors together for various festivities.

  3. Meadowbrook Golf & Country Club: Located approximately 3.5 miles south of Hartley on M12, the Meadowbrook Golf & Country Club is a public 9-hole golf course. In 2003, it was honored as Iowa's 9-Hole Course of the Year.

  1. The town’s high school mascot is a “Hawk.” Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn (HMS) is a fierce rival in local sports.


6. May City, IA

  • Population: Approx. 40 (Unincorporated)

  • County: Osceola

  • Founded: 1889

Attractions:

  1. St. John’s Lutheran Church – One of the oldest buildings in town.

  2. May City Fire Department – A central gathering place for locals.

  3. Country Roads & Rural Scenery – Endless rolling picturesque farmland and scenic gravel roads.

Historical Facts:

  1. Population was only 27 in 1902.

  2. Primarily a farming community, with little urban growth.

  3. Celebrated its 125th anniversary in July 2014.

Notable People:

  • Shawn Mayer is an emerging country singer-songwriter from May City, Iowa. Known for her smoky, soulful voice, she brings raw emotion to her edgy lyrics. At 21, she gained national attention as one of the final four contestants on the reality show "Nashville Star."

  1. It’s one of the smallest towns on RAGBRAI! Blink and you might miss it.

  2. The whole town gathers for potlucks! Community potlucks are a cherished tradition in May City where everyone contributes a dish.

  3. No stoplights, no gas stations, just country charm!


** DAY 2 **

1. Milford, IA

  • Population: 3,321

  • County: Dickinson

  • Founded: 1874

Attractions:

  1. Okoboji Tourist District – A lively area featuring shops, restaurants, and easy access to the nearby lakes.

  2. Arnold’s Park Amusement Park – One of the oldest amusement parks in the country, featuring a vintage wooden roller coaster.

  3. Lake Okoboji – Famous for boating, fishing, and stunning scenic views.

Historical Facts:

  1. Milford is known as the southern gateway to the Iowa Great Lakes, an area with 7 inter-connected lakes.

  2. The arrival of the Milwaukee Railroad in 1882 and the 1870s grasshopper plague, led to the relocation of Milford one mile north, contributing to its growth.

  3. Milford Dam, built in the 1940s, Milford's old dam and grist mill, stayed in place when the town relocated. the area is a major recreational area in the Iowa Great Lakes region.

Notable People:

  • W.F. Pillsbury – the first mayor of Milford after its incorporation in 1892.

  • The Richter brothers—Emil, Herman, and Jimmy—played a pivotal role in shaping Milford's commercial landscape. In 1960, their father, Matt Richter Sr., purchased a former coal warehouse and Allis-Chalmers dealership for his sons to establish a business. Initially named "Future Glass Block," the venture began by selling salvaged auto parts, yielding modest profits. They expanded their offerings to include second-hand socks, work slacks, and Cedar Crest shoes. A significant milestone occurred in 1964 when the business was rebranded as "The Three Sons. " The store gained regional prominence, especially with the introduction of the "University of Okoboji" concept in the 1970s, fostering a unique community identity.

2. Brown Park, MN (Meeting Town)

  • Population: Less than 50 (Unincorporated)

  • County: Jackson

  • Founded: Established as a park in 1946

Attractions:

  1. Brown County State Park – A beautiful 15 acre spot for nature lovers, offering camping, hiking, and picnicking.

  2. Crystal Springs Recreation Area – Perfect for swimming and fishing in crystal-clear waters.

  3. Windom City Park – Located nearby in Windom, it’s a larger recreation area with trails and playgrounds.

3. Wahpeton, IA

  • Population: 436

  • County: Dickinson

  • Founded: 1857

Attractions:

  1. West Okoboji Lake – One of Iowa’s most scenic lakes, perfect for swimming, fishing, and boating.

  2. Gull Point State Park – A lovely park with biking and walking trails and space for picnics as well as a beach.

Historical Facts:

  1. Wahpeton was named after the Dakota Sioux tribe, with the name meaning “leaf dwellers”, or "those who dwell in the leaves".

  2. The town developed rapidly with the arrival of the BCR&N Railroad in the 1882.

  3. In the 1920s, Wahpeton was known for being a center of agriculture in the region, particularly in grain and livestock farming.

Notable People:

  • Berkley Bedell - A successful businessman and former U.S. Congressman (1975-1987) from Iowa. He was born in Wahpeton and became known for founding the Bedell Fisheries, which grew into a major supplier of fishing tackle.

  • Lee Seeman - pledged $1 million to construct a new sailing facility for the OYC, which was completed in 1998. A year later, he donated an additional $1 million to establish an endowment fund to support the club's operations.

Fun Facts:

  1. "Venice of Iowa" - in the mid 20th century, canals were developed for drainage and creation of waterfront lots that provided safe harbor in stormy weather.


4. Superior, IA

  • Population: 123

  • County: Dickinson

  • Founded: 1882

Attractions:

  1. Superior Marsh Wildlife Area – an important 40 acrea habitat for wildlife and offers opportunities for bird-watching, and nature walks.

  2. Softail Saloon - a popular bar and grill s ituated halfway between Spirit Lake and Estherville, it offers a convenient stop for both locals and travelers.

Historical Facts:

  1. Originally a railroad town, it was established in the late 1800s when the railroad reached the area in 1882.

  2. The town grew around grain production and shipping, playing a role in Iowa’s agricultural history.

  3. Superior is the smallest town in Dickinson County, but it has a rich history and strong ties to agriculture.

  1. The Superior 71 Drive-In Theater - is a cherished outdoor cinema is located 2 miles west of town (the RAGBRAI route will not go by this theater)


** DAY 3 **

1. Estherville, IA

  • Population: 5,904

  • County: Emmet

  • Founded: 1857

Attractions:

  1. Fort Defiance State Park – A historical park named after a military fort, constructed in 1863 during the Dakota War of 1862. While no fighting occurred it Iowa, the fort was established as a precaution and now offers hiking, picnicking, and scenic views.

  2. Estherville Golf Course – A well-maintained public golf course.

  3. Pioneer Village – A living history museum showcasing the history of early settlers in the area.

Historical Facts:

  1. Estherville was named after Esther A. Ridley, one of the first white female settlers in the area.

  2. The Spirit Lake Massacre, a conflict between settlers and the Dakota Sioux in March 1857, was a nearby event that impacted the early community.

  3. The Estherville Meteorite fell in 1879 and is one of the most significant meteorite finds in U.S. history. Over 744 pounds were recovered.

Notable People:

  • Paul McKinley - Iowa State Senator - representing the 36th district. Ran for governor in 2010. Born in Chariton and attended Iowa Lakes Community College.
  • Jodi Huisentruit – A Mason City news anchor who tragically disappeared in 1995. She was from MN, but attended Iowa Lakes Community College.

  • Dr. Edward J. Liska - Veterinarian, Researcher - Prominent in veterinary nutrition and pet health innovation. Grew up in Estherville before moving on to national work in veterinary medicine.

Fun Facts:

  1. The Estherville Meteorite is displayed in the town’s Emmet County Historical Society.

  2. Estherville was once home to a large dairy industry in the late 19th an early to mid-20th centuries that helped shape the local economy.

  3. "Blizzard" Origin - Estherville helped to popularize the word "blizzard" when it was first used in print in the local newpaper, The Vindicator, in 1870.

2. Armstrong, IA

  • Population: 856

  • County: Emmet

  • Founded: 1864

  1. Armstrong Heritage Museum – Featuring local history and exhibits about the town's founding.

  2. Armstrong House in Britt - A Colonial Revival and Queen Anne style home built in 1896 for bank president, Lewis Larson. It now serves as a museum displaying period architecture and furnishings..

Emmet County Freedom Rock - painted in 2017 by artist Ray "Bubba" Sorensen to honor U.S. military veterans, the rock is a popular spot for visitors, offering a unique tribute to military service members and their families, and it serves as an important part of the local community's remembrance of its veterans.

  1. Originally known as "Armstrong Grove," the area was explored by trapper Thomas Armstrong in 1856.
  2. The town was established as a railroad town, with a strong focus on agricultural development.

  3. The region around Armstrong has been known for its rich fertile soil and was ideal for early farming practices.

Notable People:

  • Thomas Armstrong - The early explorer and trapper spent the Winter in the area in 1856 before moving on and they still named the town after him.
  • Wayne Thompson – Cartoonist and Illustrator - Best known for his work with the Des Moines Register as a staff artist and editorial cartoonist. Born and raised in Armstrong.

  • Larry Steinberg – High School Educator and Coach - A legendary coach in the Armstrong-Ringsted school system, known for building successful sports programs and mentoring generations of students.

Fun Facts:

  1. "Black gold" is what Armstrong locals call their glacially-formed, fertile soil, which makes the area a farming powerhouse for crops like corn, soybeans, and livestock.

  2. There is zero evidence of a visit from Lance Armstrong to Armstrong Iowa even though Lance participated in RAGBRAI a few years.

3. Swea City, IA

  • Population: 547

  • County: Kossuth

  • Founded: 1882

Attractions:

  1. An art deco style band shell built in the 1930s located in Reynold's Park.

  2. A bronze sculpture "In the Park", a life-sized sculpture depicts a boy, a girl and their dog playing in Reynold's Park.

  3. Kossuth County Historical Museum – Displays local history, including Swea City’s early settlement.

Historical Facts:

  1. Reynolds - the town's original name before the railroad came through
  2. Swea City was named after the Swea River in Sweden, honoring the Swedish settlers who made up a large portion of the early community. The name also references the Swedish province of Småland.

  3. Swea City’s economy grew rapidly with the arrival of the M&Stl Railway in the 1880s. The railroad played a crucial role in transporting agricultural products such as grain and livestock, fueling the town's development.

Notable People:

  • Wayne Thompson – local artist who created the sculpture "In the Park" and other public sculptures around Kossuth county and over 100 sculptures nationwide.

Fun Facts:

  1. Name Change - originally Reynolds, the town changed it's name to Swea City after consolidation with nearby city Swea because it couldn't get a post office of its own and the railroad was coming.


4. Bancroft, IA (Meeting Town)

  • Population: 680

  • County: Kossuth

  • Founded: 1884

Attractions:

  1. St. John’s Catholic Church – A beautiful church that is an architectural highlight with beautiful stained-glass windows reminiscent of European culture..

  2. S&B Distillery is a local craft distillery in Bancroft that offers hand-crafted spirits, such as vodka, gin, and whiskey. The distillery has become a popular stop for tourists and locals alike, highlighting the town’s growing interest in craft beverages.

  3. The Memorial Baseball Park honors local veterans and serves as a tribute to the community’s deep-rooted sports culture.

Historical Facts:

  1. Bancroft was named after George, a prominent American historian, statesman and diplomat who contributed to the town's early development.

  2. The town was established as a railroad reservation in 1881 by the Western Town Lot Company to be an agricultural and railway center for the surrounding area.

  3. The Bancroft Register (Newspaper) was started in April 1882 by D.A. Ellis. It was affected by a fire in 1893, which destroyed much of the downtown area and impacted early records of the newspaper and is still serving the community today..

  • Paul Bernhard – Original Mr. Pork Chop.

  • Matt Bernhard – Mr. Pork Chop Jr.

  • Aaron Bernhard – Mr. Pork Chop III.

Fun Facts:

  1. Home to Mr. Porkchop! - Paul Bernhard became a mobile RAGBRAI vendor in 1983 after he served his special Iowa-style pork chops to riders passing through his hometown of Bancroft in 1982. After's Paul's passing in Nov 2016, his son Matt took the helm until his passing in Mar 2024. Now Matt's son Aaron is running the pink bus.

  2. RAGBRAI will pass through Bancroft for the fourth time in 2025. Previous years were: 1982, 1996, and 2014.

  3. In the early 1880's, there were 3 hotels in Bancroft to support its thriving business community.

5. Titonka, IA

  • Population: 423

  • County: Kossuth

  • Founded: 1898

Attractions:

  1. Union Slough National Wildlife Refuge - Located nearby, this refuge offers excellent opportunities for wildlife observation and is a designated migratory waterfowl refuge established in 1938.

  2. POW-MIA Display, at theBuffalo Creek Activity Center - a single, unused table setting dedicated to honoring prisoners of war and those missing in action, and this tradition of setting a separate table in honor of our prisoners of war and missing comrades has been in place since the end of the Vietnam War.

  3. Titonka Brewing Company: A local brewery where you can sample craft beers including ales, stouts, IPAs and sours.

Historical Facts:

  1. Titonka is derived from the Sioux word meaning "big black (buffalo)". The name was chosen in honor of a buffalo hunt that took place decades before the town was established.

  2. The town was originally named Ripley, but it was changed after finding a similar name to Rippley, Iowa.

  3. Titonka's development began in 1898, shortly after the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern Railway extended its tracks through the area. .

Notable People:

  • Loren Hansen: A lifelong Titonka resident, Hansen graduated from Titonka High School, served as the town's Chief of Police for almost two decades, and also worked in the creamery, drove a school bus, and maintained the Buffalo Township Cemetery.

  • Jim Mayland: A Titonka native and High School graduate, Mayland served in the Army during the Vietnam War and was the General Manager of Titonka Telephone Company for three decades

Fun Facts:

  1. The town growth expanded rapidly in the initial phase, with about 60 buildings being constructed within the first 60 days.

  2. "Everglades of Iowa" - The area surrounding Titonka was originally characterized by numerous swamps and marshes, earning it the nickname "Everglades of Iowa". Extensive drainage efforts converted this area into productive farmland.

  3. Kossuth County was one of the last areas of Iowa to be settled, the early pioneers who developed Titonka faced a significant challenge in making the land productive due to the extensive Wetlands and Prairies and difficulty to drain.

6. Woden, IA

  • Population: 181

  • County: Hancock

  • Founded: 1898

Attractions:

  1. Woden Community Park – A small but scenic park perfect for a quick stop or a picnic.

  2. Woden’s Antique Shops – The town is known for its antique stores, offering a variety of old treasures.

  3. Lake Cornelia – A nearby lake offering outdoor recreation such as boating, fishing, and hiking.

Historical Facts:

  1. Woden was named after the Norse god Odin, which reflects the town’s early Scandinavian settlers. The naming was also said to have been influenced by the loud noise of dynamiting during railroad construction, which sounded like war.

  2. The town was initially called Bingham and Ripley, but both names were rejected by the Post Office for being too similar to other towns

  3. Woden was incorporated as a city in 1904.

  • Thomas A. Way: A founder of the town of Woden.

  • F.N. Pitkin: The surveyor who helped lay out the original plat of the town of Woden.

  • Betty Grundberg (1938-2022), born in Woden, Iowa, served as a Republican member of the Iowa House of Representatives from 1993 to 2003, representing the 73rd district

  1. Early Cement Sidewalks: In its early days, Woden was one of the few towns that had cement sidewalks lining Main Street, a noteworthy improvement at the time.


7. Crystal Lake, IA

  • Population: 253

  • County: Hancock

  • Founded: 1865

Attractions:

  1. Crystal Lake: The lake itself is a primary attraction, offering fishing, boating, and other water-related activities. Crystal Lake has a maximum depth of 18.4 ft.

  2. World's Largest Bullhead: This large (12' long and 4' wide) sculpture of a bullhead fish is a roadside attraction in Crystal Lake.
  3. Crystal Lake State Park – located just outside of Crystal Lake (near Forest City), this park on the east shore of Crystal Lake offers a variety of recreational activities, hiking trails, camping spots, and a great place for fishing.

Historical Facts:

  1. Crystal Lake was named for its clear waters and great fishing and was a popular location for early settlers.

  2. Edwin Trumbull and Myron Booth were the first settlers in 1865.
  3. Crystal Lake grew around the railroad, which brought economic development to the area.

Notable People:

  • Edwin Trumbull: As one of the first two settlers in Crystal Lake, Iowa in 1865, Edwin Trumbull's presence marked the very beginning of the town. He was the first to claim land and build a house there.
  • John Brink: A prominent local surveyor who created the plat of survey for the Village of Nunda (later North Crystal Lake) in 1868.

  • Lynn Richards: He was a prominent citizen of Crystal Lake, and Head Cashier of the United State Bank of Crystal Lake who was found dead near his car in 1931

Fun Facts:

  1. The town had several banks between 1898 and 1910 in response to the construction of a railroad line through the town.

  2. Crystal Lake is a popular stop on the annual RAGBRAI (Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa), with 2025 marking the eighth time the town has been part of the route.

  3. Part of Iowa's Prairie Pothole Region: Crystal Lake was formed by retreating glaciers thousands of years ago, and is a part of the distinctive "prairie pothole" region of the Northern Des Moines Lobe.

Forest City, IA

  • Population: 4,285

  • County: Winnebago (partially Hancock County)

  • Founded: 1855

Attractions:

  1. Winnebago Industries Visitor Center – Learn about the history of the famous RV company, take a factory tour, and see vintage models.

  2. Pilot Knob State Park – Founded in 1923 and one of the oldest parks in Iowa with one of Iowa’s highest points, it's 700 acres features scenic hiking trails and an observation tower.

  3. Heritage Park of North Iowa – A museum showcasing antique tractors, farm equipment, and rural history dedicated to preserving America' rural heritage.

Historical Facts:

  1. Originally known as "Puckerbrush", Forest City was named for its wooded location, which early settlers found suitable for logging and farming.
  2. Winnebago Industries was founded here in 1958 and grew to become a major employer and RV manufacturer.

  3. Forest City was once home to Waldorf University which was later renamed to Waldorf College, before merging with Columbia Southern University.

Notable People:

  • John K. Hanson – Founder of Winnebago Industries, which revolutionized the RV industry.

  • Jerry Hilgenberg – Former University of Iowa football player and NFL athlete.

  • Dale McKinney – Renowned Iowa architect known for his modernist designs.

  • Bob Backlund: "Mr Backlund" - Former professional wrestler and actor and twice All-American in both football and wrestling.

5. Dundee, IA

  • Population: 194

  2. How the town was named has two different versions - #1 Some say Hiram Wood named the town after Dundee, Scotland and #2 other sources say the town was first called "Wood" until it was named by the railroad company.

  3. Dundee was incorporated as a town in 1873, though it had been a settlement for several years prior.

  4. The 1906 fire took out many downtown businesses.

Notable People:

  • Hiram D. Wood - Born in Kentucky and served in the Mexican War, Hiram lived in several locations before becoming postmaster in Dundee in 1887. He as married and had 8 children. In 1889, his daughter Maggie took over as postmistress.

  • J.L. "Louis" Gilbert - farmer, businessman, teacher and postmaster became Dundee's First Mayor (year/term unknown)

Fun Facts:

  1. On June 16th 1922, the Dundee Savings Bank was robbed at 2am - Four robbers cut the telegraph and phone lines and dynamited the safe and made off with $1,200 in cash and $4,500 in bonds. The bank vault was untouched. No details if the robbers were caught.

  2. The Dundee Savings Bank closed during the depression and has been many businesses over the years.

  3. The Schroeder Brothers Store was the first building constructed in Dundee by Hiram D. Wood in 1887. Cans of corn, peas, beans, etc. sold for 5 cents which cost 4 cents each. A pound loaf of bread sold for 5 cents. Ground hamburger and pork sausage sold for 25 cents for 3 pounds.

  4. 1916 - Electricity -Dundee housewives revel in the convenience of electric lights.
  5. Dundee’s city park is famous for its annual “Summer Celebration - Dundee Day", featuring local musicians and food trucks.


6. Edgewood, IA (Meeting Town)

  • Population: 910

  • Founded: 1855

  1. Edgewood Rodeo Grounds: The Edgewood Rodeo Grounds hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including rodeos and other community events.

  2. Edgy Megs LLC: A unique and popular gift shop featuring home decor, lighting, rugs, furniture, and kitchen gadgets.

  3. Bixby State Preserve: (approx. 5 miles north of Edgewood) A beautiful 184-acre nature preserve featuring Ice Cave, one of Iowa's rarest ecosystems, and opportunities for trout fishing in the coldwater streams.

  • Lloyd Appleton (1906-1999), Competed in the 1928 Summer Olympics in Wrestling. Born in Edgewood.

Fun Facts:

  1. Edgewood is home to Kendrick Forest Products who operates the largest working sawmill in Iowa.

  2. Yankee Settlement: Edgewood was originally known as an unincorporated "Yankee Settlement" beginning in the early 1840s.

  3. Bixby State Preserve includes "Ice Cave" which is one of Iowa's rarest ecosystems.

  4. Pro Rodeo Days - Happened each Jun where young ladies are elected to represent the town and local persons are honored as Grand Marshal in the parade.


7. Garber, IA

  • Population: 79

  • County: Clayton

  • Founded: 1872

Attractions:

  1. Canoeing and Kayaking: Garber provides a public river access, the Garber Access, perfect for launching canoes and kayaks onto the Turkey River.

  2. Fishing: The Turkey River is renowned for its smallmouth bass fishing, with opportunities to also catch rock bass and walleye.
  3. Motor Mill Historic Site: Located upstream from Garber, this historic mill complex is a must-see, offering tours and a glimpse into the area's past.

Historical Facts:

  1. Originally Named East Elkport: Before being named Garber, the town was initially called East Elkport.
  2. Frederick Hartage built the first saw-mill in 1847,and a grist mill was later added, both run by water-power. Frederick also built the first house.

  • John Garber- The town's founder, initial surveyor, and first postmaster and person the town was renamed after.

Fun Facts:

  1. Garber is the Gateway to the Turkey River.

  2. The Keystone Bridge is one of the largest twin-arched keystone bridges in the United States and built entirely from local limestone.
  3. The local “Show Days” festival is the highlight of the year, dedicated to the area's early farming and home practices and techniques.

  4. Garber boasts some of Iowa's best sunsets, with views over the surrounding farmlands.


8. Guttenberg, IA

  • Population: 1,808

  • County: Clayton

  • Founded: 1848 and incorporated in 1851

Attractions:

  1. Lock and Dam No. 10Located on the Mississippi River, a popular spot for fishing and watching river traffic. It was completed in 1937 and underwent major rehabilitation from 1989 to 2006.

  2. Lockmaster's House Heritage Museum: Preserves the history of the river and town. It is housed in the original Lockmaster's House from the time the lock was built.

  3. Mississippi River Trail – Ideal for biking and walking along the scenic riverbank.
