Des Moines, IA On Saturday, May 1, 2010, the City of Des Moines will begin installing pavement markings to convert Ingersoll Avenue from a four-lane roadway to a three-lane roadway between Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and Polk Boulevard. Crews are scheduled to begin work at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, weather-permitting. One traffic lane in each direction will be maintained; however, drivers can expect slight delays during this work. On-street parking will be prohibited on Ingersoll Avenue from 19th Street to Polk Boulevard on Saturday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in order to make room for the painting equipment and prevent paint from getting on any vehicles. Vehicles parked on the street during this time will be towed, but access will be maintained to businesses and private parking during this work. As sections of Ingersoll are completed in the afternoon, “No Parking” signs will be removed and on-street parking will be allowed. There is a lot of work to do to completely restripe this street, and if this painting cannot be completed on Saturday, we will continue on Sunday (May 2nd). If we do need to continue working on Sunday, the “No Parking” signs will remain in place and the on-street parking restrictions will apply on Sunday between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., or until the work is completed and the signs are removed by the City. We plan to complete all of the painting work to restripe Ingersoll to one lane in each direction, with a center left-turn lane and bike lanes adjacent to the parking during this weekend work. However, our crews will finish some intersection painting (crosswalks and stop bars) and certain sign removal and installation (primarily adjustments to parking signs) the following week during normal business hours. Painting the street is similar to painting your house – you can’t do it successfully if it is too wet. The forecast for Saturday and Sunday looks OK now, but if the forecast changes to call for rain, especially Saturday, we may need to cancel and reschedule for another weekend with warm, dry weather. A summary of the media notification for this work is attached. Please feel free to share this with others.
