Two drivers who lost their licenses are accused of causing two tragedies last summer: the deaths of 6-year-old Irving Aguilar-Gonzalez, who was playing on a trampoline in his Des Moines backyard when he was hit by a runaway truck in June, and Wade Franck, who was killed while riding in a group of cyclists in August.

How can Iowa keep people with multiple OWIs or other unsafe drivers from getting behind the wheel again? A panel of experts will look at solutions that balance public safety and motorists’ rights.

Panelists:
  • Frank Harris, director of state government affairs, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD)
  • Dana Wingert, Des Moines police chief
  • Mark D. Lowe, director, Motor Vehicle Division, Iowa Department of Transportation
  • Bob Rehkemper, local defense attorney
  • Bill Mickelson, a law enforcement consultant who will discuss South Dakota’s 24/7 Sobriety Program
    More details: http://apps.sd.gov/atg/dui247/
  • Rep. Sandy Salmon, R-Janesville

If you have information about other successful state programs that keep suspended and revoked drivers off the roads, please bring along details.
