Carl’s community involvement
Running community:
- The Capital Striders running and walking club—former board member
- Created college scholarship program based on an endowment program, helping provide assistance to over 50 area high school XC runners.
- Started the Loop the Lake Run as first event at Gray's Lake Park trail (2001) that is a highlight of the nearly 20 years of development in downtown Des Moines. Then he encouraged the club to support the trail purchase the four doggy do-do stations to help keep Gray’s Lake nice for the public—first do-do stations in the metro!
- With proceeds from Capital Pursuit (Carl was director), led the club in donating the first $5,000 to the Principal Riverwalk campaign which led to it becoming one of the most used parts of the trail system in our city. He encouraged us to provide financial support the signage system on the trails and water fountains along the trails in public places.
- In 2007, initiated the Capital Striders annual New Year’s Day Mitten Run which raises money for the Boys & Girls Club of Central Iowa—over $10,000 in cash and untold number of jackets, mittens, stocking caps.
Biking community:
- Co-founder of Des Moines Bicycle Collective (2008)
- Convinced MTA (now DART) to put bike racks on all transit buses (2005). The original projection was 7,145 uses per year. Last year: 65,000 annual uses
- Trail maps: created the first metro trail map in 2010. With annual updates: 450,000 maps printed.
- Valet bike parking at Downtown Farmers’ Market, now in 11th year. About 5,000 bikes parked annually over 26 Saturdays.
- Annual week-long bike camp (since 2010); last four years partnered with Des Moines Police Department.
- Initiated BCycle program (2010) that has grown to 23 stations and 120+ bikes
- Created PedalArt poster show of original bike-themed posters (10th year)
Trails and parks:
- Fund-raising cabinet for rehabilitation of the Fifth Street/Jackson Street/green bridge. (This grew out of my first council vote in 2013 to allow community to raised money to save the historic bridge destined for the scrap pile).
- Previously chaired the Trails and Greenways Committee
- Friends of Des Moines Parks board of directors. Expanded a golf charity outing in 2016 to include a bike option—first event of its kind in metro area.
Complete streets:
- Chairs Transportation Safety Committee
- Active participation in MoveDSM—city’s first transportation master plan.
