Due to water and sewer construction work at the Cherry Glen Recreation Area, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District, is closing a portion of the Neal Smith Trail at Saylorville Lake indefinitely starting March 20.

The closure will extend from Red Feather Prairie Access, north to the Cherry Glen Recreation Area.

All trail users should stay out of marked construction zones and observe posted signs and fencing.

For more information, contact the Saylorville Lake Project Office at 515-276-4656.

BIKEIOWA NOTE:

Here is a Google Map link to the area.

We ride this area often and the detours look pretty dismal.

Maybe out to NW Polk City Drive (busy road with a large gravel shoulder) then take a left on NW 94th all the way down to Cherry Glen.

Fat Bike could take shoreline from Southern edge of Red Feather Prairie to Cherry Glen boar ramp (conditions vary by the week!)

We'll post updates here once we ride in person.

4/4/23 UPDATE: We rode the detour.
NW Polk City Drive IS a fairly busy road - more so during rush hours.
It does have a wider shoulder with rumble strips between you and the car.
The NW 94th corner has a stop light and take a bit to get through.
But this is viable detour for those wanting to ride further on the Neal Smith Trail while this part is under construction.
We are trying to find out the closure duration.
