A beloved Ankeny High School history and economics teacher is fighting for his life after suffering a traumatic brain injury while riding his bike home early Saturday morning.

Greg Lage, 51, began teaching at Ankeny High School in 2000. He is also an avid cyclist who has ridden 21 editions of the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa.

Lage crashed his bike as he rode home after 2 a.m. Saturday from his second job as a bartender at Ken’s, a speakeasy below the Iowa Taproom at 215 E 3rd St., said his wife Mindy Myers Lage, 52. The family lives in Des Moines’ Beaverdale Neighborhood. If the weather is nice, Lage bikes to both Ankeny High and his weekly shift at Ken’s, Myers Lage said.

“He just loves it,” Myers Lage said. “It just brings him great joy.”
