The largest natural body of water in Iowa will be circled by cyclists next weekend in the Iowa Great Lakes.
After being canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic last summer, the annual Bike Ride Around Spirit Lake (BRASL) is on once again.
It is scheduled for Saturday, July 10.
“It’s awesome to have it back and to have all the events back,” said Regina Reed, membership and events coordinator for the Spirit Lake Chamber of Commerce. “We’re very excited to get back to normal.”
For BRASL, back to normal means riders have the option of a 15-mile cruise around Big Spirit Lake, a 25-mile ride that ventures north toward Loon Lake or a 50-mile route that heads up to Jackson, MN, before returning to Iowa.

Reed said that surprisingly the 50-mile route has proved to be most popular route in recent years and thinks folks will be especially happy with the ride this year.
“A lot of the roads have been resurfaced up that way so they’ll have some nice smooth riding this year,” Reed said. “Pretty much anybody can hop on a bike and ride 15 miles and those who are more serious can do the 50 miles. It’s nice to have the opportunity for those of all skills to enjoy a bike ride.”
