Police have identified the man whose body was found Saturday in the Des Moines River near Riverview Park as Diaa Elhag Kafi, 42, of Des Moines.

A fisherman and a cyclist riding on a bike trail bothspotted Kafi's body in the water at around 4:40 p.m. that afternoon, police say.

Kafi allegedlyjumped into the river at Prospect Park on March 17, Des Moines Police Sgt. Paul Parizek said. Police were at the park, just upriver from Riverview Park, that evening on an unrelated matterwhen Kafi allegedly began yelling at officers, hopped in a vehicle, and drove through the park "erratically."

When police followed him, Parizek said, the man got out of the car and jumped into the river.

The Des Moines Fire Department's Water Emergency Team was called in to search for the man, but they did not find him. Further unsuccessful searches took place on March 18 and 25, Parizek said.
