SHENANDOAH, Ia. — A RAGBRAI rider was flown to an Omaha hospitalSunday evening with life-threatening injuries after a pickup truck hit and dragged him and the tent he was insideat a campground.
James Foley, 67, of Jacksonville, Fla., was in a tent at the 59er Motel & Campgrounds in Shenandoah when a pickup truck hauling a trailer went off the drivewayand struck him at about11:30 p.m., according to an Iowa State Patrol report.
“It’s devastating,” said Matt Colman, one of Foley’s teammates. “Our prayers and thoughts are with him and his family.”
The driver of the Ford F-250, Danny Cardin, 55, of Homer, La., dragged the tent and Foley for50 feet, then drove on to his campsite, troopers said. Cardinwas charged withserious injury by vehicle and leaving the scene of a serious injury accident, according to the Fremont County Jail, where he was being held Monday afternoon.
A medical helicopter flew Foley to Creighton University Medical Center.
