DES MOINES, Iowa – You may have pulled out the bikes this weekend, but there is one thing you don't want to forget when you head out for a ride. Safety experts say you need to wear a helmet anytime you have wheels under your feet.

"Bike helmets are actually the single most effective safety device for preventing injury and death in bicycle crashes. So, wearing a helmet really does make a big difference in injury," said Jessica LaCroix, with Blank Children’s Hospital’s Center for Advocacy and Outreach.

LaCroix says as it's also important to make sure it fits properly.

“We want to make sure that there’s only two fingers from the eyebrows to the top of the helmet, and that there’s only one finger from the chin to the chin strap. When those chin straps are hanging really far down, that helmet is not going to stay placed, so we need to make sure it’s nice and tight under the chin,” she said.

You need to adjust the straps around the ears to make sure the helmet stays in place and protects the entire head.
