Marshall County's board of supervisors say they support recreational trails, but due to tough economic conditions, are unable to allocate county dollars to a local non-profit.

At a recent board meeting, Kim Schryver, of Trails Inc., requested $30,000 from the county for 2017.

She said the dollars would not only support the group's work to develop the Iowa River Trail, but also increase the organization's competitiveness when it applies for grants.

The proposed 34-mile paved trail would link Marshalltown to Steamboat Rock, with stops in Albion, Liscomb, Union, Gifford and Eldora along the way.

Schryver said recreational amenities such as trails attract families and businesses to cities.
