Here's an update on the project of paving the Raccoon River Valley
Trail's crossings of gravel roads on the original "south loop".
Work continues on paving the Raccoon River Valley Trail's crossings
of about 15 gravel roads in Greene and Guthrie Counties. And in Dallas
County, the paving work has ended for this year, but there are plans to
complete the remaining six crossings next year if acceptable bids are
received for the work.
All of this is happening on the RRVT's original "south loop," which
stretches 56 miles from the west side of Waukee through Adel, Redfield,
Linden, Panora, Yale, Herndon, Cooper and on to Jefferson. When that
original trail was built, most of it with asphalt, there was no
consideration given to paving across the gravel roads, as the asphalt
would not have lasted long under the weight of heavy farm equipment and
other vehicular traffic.
Photo is the crossing of 252nd Street just southeast of Jefferson.
