The central Iowa biking community continues to lean on each other after the death of Wade Franck.
Hundreds of bicyclist’s honored a man who was beloved within the
cycling community by doing what Wade Franck loved most riding a bike on
the open trails.
Kyle Robinson, the owner of Ankeny’s Kyle’s bikes, organized the ride
over the High Trestle Trail early Wednesdaynight. Several hundred
bicyclist’s paused to memorialize Wade Franck on the bridge. “It’s
important just to show our unity in numbers and that we just aren’t
small numbers of people anymore,” said cyclist Sterling Heise.
Franck, who was an employee at Kyle’s Bikes, was struck by a drunk
driver on August 16, while on his bicycle in the 5100 block of Grand
Avenue. Franck died two days later of his injuries. Police say
Jonathan Rodriguez Leyva, the driver, had a barred license and was drunk
at the time of the crash. He is being charged with homicide by OWI and
other traffic violations.
“Hopefully some positive change comes out of this. It’s a terrible
thing and a big loss to the community what happened to Wade. Just really
hope something good comes out of this,” said Josh Jones, another
cyclist who attended the event.
Those who knew Wade are still coming to grips with the circumstances
surrounding his death, but they hope the #RideForWade can be a
reflection of a man who made an impact on the community and also become a
chain reaction for change on the roads. Scott Sumpter, founder of
BikeIowa.com, said, “It’s the iconic Trestle Bridge for central Iowa and
Wade is iconic for this movement that we are seeing right now. It’s
powerful, it’s sad at the same time but it’s neat to see the cycling
community come together for one of their own.”
