Carroll had planned to join his first Register's Annual Great Bicycle
Ride Across Iowa last year, until nasty fate intervened.
It was the cool, beautiful morning of July 10, 2014, complete with a clear blue sky.

to the fitness app on his phone, Carroll knows that he had biked
precisely 9.15 miles from his home in Jefferson on a rural highway west
to Scranton before he was hit from behind by a car. It was shortly after
