After the late spring sun sets on the evening of Saturday, there will
be hundreds of glowing flashes cutting through the fresh night air.
Spokes bright with neon will demand attention as the wheels they connect
soar through the streets of downtown Des Moines.
Summer in Iowa
is almost insistent on cycling. When you add the elements of live music,
contests, alluring prizes and the benefit of a great cause, the
Moonlight Classic is almost insistent on being an exceptional annual
community ride. Consider it the perfect end to Bike Month.
Nancy
Bobo, CFRE, Vice President of Development at Orchard Place, said they
are expecting around 800 participants and 150 volunteers to converge for
the fundraiser. She estimates this year they will raise $90,000 for the
non-profit that provides a wide array of mental health services for
youth. According to the organization’s website, Orchard Place serves
10,000 kids throughout the state.
“Proceeds from the Moonlight
Classic will support our Latino Outreach and Enrichment Programs for
children with emotional challenges as well as the Orchard Place Summer
School at Orchard Place Campus,” Bobo said. “All three of these programs
are mission-driven services that are totally charitably funded. We
anticipate raising approximately $90,000 through this year’s event.”
