The Estherville City Council Monday evening moved a step closer to construction of the first phase of the city's trail plan. The council approved a federal aid agreement with the Iowa DOT for the trail project along the west fork of the Des Moines River.
City officials approved a trail plan in 2010 and the agreement approved Monday helps jumpstart the first phase of the project from North Fourth Street to the Estherville Rock Garden-approximately 1.02 miles. The trail will travel along the river through Joe Hoye, North Riverside and Mickelson parks.

Other features of the trail include segments to Joe Hoye Park as well as a small segment to the bathrooms and playground in Mickelson Park.
