A Lake View, Iowa, man faces charges after a June accident that killed an Onawa cyclist.
Eric Meyer, 30, is charged with failure to wear a safety belt, failure to have proof of insurance and unsafe passing with an enhanced penalty. All three are misdemeanor charges.
Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Mark Miller saidShawn Gosch and Jeffrey Gray, both of Onawa, were riding bicycles west on Iowa State Highway 7, west of Manson, Iowa, on June 20.
Gosch and Gray had been riding single-file when Meyer, who was driving a Chevrolet Caprice, attempted to pass them, Miller said. Gosch was hit from behind and collided with Gray, who was thrown into a ditch.
Gosch, 47, was pronounced dead at Pocahontas Community Hospital. Gray, 49, was taken to another hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, Miller said. Meyer was unhurt.
Both Gosch and Gray were wearing helmets, Miller said.
Because the accident resulted in Gosch's death, Meyer faces a charge with an enhanced penalty, Miller said. The severity has not yet been decided, he said.
Meyer’s initial appearance is scheduled for Aug. 26
