More two-wheelers will be seen on Iowa’s roadways today as this is
the start of Bike to Work Week. Mark Strub, with Bike Central in Le
Mars, says bicycling has become increasingly popular in recent years in
Iowa and nationwide.”There are a couple of foundations and organizations
nationally that have been pushing this for several years to try and get
people out and about and get them moving,” Strub says. “There is also
some fuel savings.”
Strub credits annual events like RAGBRAI for helping stimulate
Iowans’ growing interest in riding bicycles. Strub says his sales have
been climbing.
“What we see here in the springtime is the fitness-type bicycle or
something that’s going to compatible with just cruising around town,”
Strub says. “As summer gets closer, we see a lot more of the road bikes
being purchased.” A report released recently by the U.S. Census Bureau
indicates about half-a-percent of all workers in Iowa use a bike to get
to and from work.
