The Iowa Safe Routes to School meeting will take place on January 25, 2014 from 0830-1000 at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines during the Iowa Bicycle Expo.

This year at the 2014 Iowa Bicycle Summit, the Iowa Safe Routes to School Meeting will be led by Alana Croco, Safe Routes to School Program director. Alana will delve into the impact she has made across the state since her start in April 2013. Attendees are invited to discuss their community’s involvement with Safe Routes to School or lack thereof.

Our guest speaker, Robert Harding, an injured cyclist and member of the Iowa Brain Injury Alliance will discuss his road to recovery after an almost devastating bicycle crash. He will also discuss the importance of helmets, how a helmet changed his life, and promoting bicycle helmet education for children.

During this meeting we will brainstorm ideas on how to involve more schools and agencies throughout the state of Iowa in Safe Routes to School and how to market more effectively to our audiences.

Lastly, a training will be led on a Walking School Bus Menu. This menu was developed by a Walking School Bus Committee in Cedar Rapids for use in conducting Walking School Bus pilots and growing sustainable Walking School Bus programs both locally and statewide.

Let’s explore our mutual mission by expanding the importance of Safe Routes to School. This meeting is a fantastic opportunity to network while growing lasting partnerships and to change the state of Iowa one safe route at a time.
