om Zirbel captured the elite men’s title at Saturday’s Clear Lake
Criterium. For Zirbel, a Clear Lake native, familiar scenery decorated
the lakeside route.

finished second with 97.82 points, five points behind Zirbel’s winning
total of 92.73 points. Derek Goerke completed the top three, finishing
with 102.91 points.
Sixth place finisher Adam Koble noted the event’s ever-increasing speed.
“That was fast,” Koble said. “It just keeps getting faster every year.”
Speed wasn’t limited to the men’s elite criterium, though.
The Clear Lake
Omnium Weekend, part of the city’s annual Bicycles Blues & BBQ
Festival, also featured a road race and time trial.
In men’s elite
time trial action, Zirbel again claimed first, finishing in 13:55.0 for
265.48 points. Thirty seconds later, Chad Haga crossed the finished line
for second place. Jonathan Toftoy earned the event’s final medal with a
time of 14:34.0.
Lisa Vetterlein
won the women’s time trial in 16:47 for 540 points. Second place
finisher Karen Stierler finished just seven seconds behind Vetterlein in
16:54. Leah Kleagar completed the podium with a third place time of
17:13.
