Clear Lake, IA By Kirk Hardcastle kirk.hardcastle@globegazette.com Posted: Sunday, July 10, 2011 Nick Frey claimed the Iowa State Criterium Championship profressional race Saturday night. His Jamis/Sutter Home teammate Tom Zirbel placed fourth in the 70-minute race through the streets of Clear Lake. And Zirbel, the Clear Lake native, was pleased with the outcome. “It’s perfect,” Zirbel said. “It worked perfectly. “That’s my teammate up there on the top step. His win is my win and my win is his win. The most important thing is having the Jamis/Sutter Home jersey on the top step.” Frey, who took the lead for good with eight laps to go, gave credit to the Clear Lake crowd that lined the streets. “This is better crowd than any race at Nature Valley, which is one of the biggest national race calendar races in the United States,” he said moments after the race. “I don’t think I would have been able to do that without the crowd cheering.” Zirbel said he was glad to be racing in front of his old hometown. “This is the third time I’ve been out here,” he said. “I’ve had a really good time. “It is special. I have a lot of family in the area. A lot of my friends come out and see it as well. I just loving racing around these roads that I grew up on.” It was Zirbel’s third year in attendance but his first in the criterium race. “I was warming up on the course earlier (Saturday),” he said, “and I was definitely getting excited.” Zirbel will race in today’s 82-mile road race as well. “The wind makes the road race course (today),” he said. “There’s not a lot undulation and hills in this area, as you know, but the wind can just make it fierce. “Eighty-two miles can be a long way with the wind and the conditions are nasty.” Read more:
