Cedar Rapids, IA
Cedar Rapids Transit has purchased four new heavy-duty, low-
floor transit buses that will be used on its fixed-route
bus service. The 2009 model Gillig buses are the first new
heavy-duty, non-experimental buses that the City has
purchased in over twenty years and will replace 1978 model
buses. The new buses incorporate the latest design and
accessibility features to ensure better vehicle control,
ride comfort and safety.
The buses were made in the USA at Gillig Corporation's
manufacturing facility in Hayward, California at a cost of
$322,000 per bus with 83% of the cost paid by grants from
the Federal Transit Administration. The new buses are
scheduled to be placed into service by the end of July.
In addition, bike racks have been installed on 85% of the
bus fleet operated by Cedar Rapids Transit on its fixed-
route bus service. The VeloPorter 2 bike racks, made in the
USA by Sportsworks, accommodate two bicycles with tire
widths up to three inches and wheel sizes from 16 to 19
inches. The fold-down racks are easily deployed and are
clearly marked with easy to follow instructions for bicycle
riders to safely load and unload their bicycles.
