Ladies, Come develop the skills you need to enjoy the fun, beauty and training benefits of mountain biking at 1pm on Saturday, October 18. You will learn the skills you need to have fun riding your bike off road. The clinic will feature lot’s of fun and lot’s of schwag (door prizes) from our sponsors that will be given away at the conclusion of the clinic, and best of all, it is FREE! Meet at Greenwood Park in Des Moines at 1pm. Greenwood Park is located near the end of 45th St., just south of Grand Ave. near the old Science Center (and also near the Art Center). This will be a women’s only beginner level clinic and will cover all of the basic skills that you need to ride your mountain bike with confidence. Some of the basics that will be covered include, cornering, riding over logs, descending, climbing and special avoidance skills such as avoiding running into trees, crashing, falling over, running into / over the wildlife and running into each other.
RIDE DETAILS
We will start at the south side of the pond in Greenwood Park. The first part of the clinic will cover the basics in an open grass field. For the second part of the clinic we will ride the paved bike path down to the trailhead of J-11. We’ll take J-11 to Denman’s and ride through Denman’s, stopping at various obstacles for instruction and practice. The pace of the ride will be slow so please be patient and please do not worry about getting left behind because nobody will get left behind! Last years clinic was a little over 3 hours long, only because we ran out of daylight. Everybody had a great time, myself included! Plan for the clinic to take somewhere around 3 to 4 hours. Snack food, water and energy drinks will be provided by Hy-Vee. However, if you feel that you might need more, then please plan to bring enough water and food (Power Bars, gels, etc.) to get you through 4 hours of light aerobic activity. Please check this site in the days coming up to the event as weather will determine whether this happens when scheduled. If the weather forces us to postpone, we will announce a reschedule date ASAP. This clinic was made possible by Rasmussen Bike Shop, Iowa Women’s Outdoor Association (I.O.W.A.), HyVee, Iowa Health System, CITA (Central Iowa Trail Association), Orbea Bicycles, Oakley Eyewear, Louis Garneau, ProBar and Sock Guy, so please consider trying the products of each of our sponsors! And while you are at it, stop by Rasmussen Bike Shop and take a look at their selection of beautiful Orbea bikes and please consider making a donation to CITA. Without CITA, we wouldn’t have the amazing network of mountain biking trails that we have in the heart of Des Moines, IA! For more information about other events sponsored by the Iowa Women’s Outdoor Association (I.O.W.A.), visit http://www.iowaoutdoorwomen.com/. I.O.W.A. is a part of the Iowa Sports Foundation, the same group that organizes the Iowa Games. I.O.W.A. has a pretty simple mission statement: To encourage women to embrace wellness and health, reach their greatest potential and carry a sense of vitality. No RSVP is required. Just come with your bike and helmet; leave with skills and confidence! Questions? Cam Kirkpatrick 515.418.0229 ckirkpatrick@cbi.com
