Mason City, IA by Briana Denney KIMT News 3 A Massachusetts native brought his mission to bring awareness to cancer through North Iowa. Steve Laskey is marked day 86 on Wednesday. Laskey started in Alaska and is riding through the nation ending in Florida. Laskey calls the ride his 5000 mile mission. Laskey is cycling for cancer awareness. He hopes to raise money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation- Live strong. Laskey said he has loves one's who have battled cancer. That is partly the reason he chose to ride for this cause. He said on this long journey, stories of others affected by cancer is what keeps him going each day. "I think about that a lot when I'm out there and it carries me and I get a little emotional sometimes," said Laskey. Laskey said the moto of this mission is "Effort Inspires Effort". It's a term he learned while coaching wrestling in his hometown. He said it's a simple philosophy but he hopes it will inspire others to help the cause. The cyclist knows this mission may seem overwhelming but there are many things that carry him through. "It's more of a test of heart and spirit than physical ability and I'm doing ok on all three," said Laskey. Laskey said he hopes more North winds will be along his travels. It helps give him speed to head South.
