DES MOINES, Iowa -- A new 25-mile bike trail from Ankeny to Woodward will feature a 13 story tall bridge. State officials approved a $1.75 million Vision Iowa grant for the project on Wednesday. The recreational trail will use an old rail line between the two cities as well as convert a rail bridge over the Des Moines River. The bridge will feature unique sculptures and lighting. It will also be one of the tallest and longest bridges in the U.S. after it's completed. Construction is expected to start in winter 2009. The project still needs to raise $550,000 in order to qualify for the Vision Iowa grant. Some parts of the trail are already been built, but officials said construction is being slowed down by people trying to use the trail before it's complete. Other parts of the trail won't be completed until funding is secured. Officials hope to complete the project by fall 2010.
