By Erika Binegar The Gazette erika.binegar@gazettecommunications.com IOWA CITY — The sound of tinkling bells floated in the cold breeze Saturday as hundreds peddled through the Johnson County Fairgrounds, periodically jumping off their cycles to hop over hurdles or scramble up a hill. Bikers wove through yellow "caution" tape that marked race routes for the fourth Carousel Volkswagen Jingle Cross Rock, which benefits the University of Iowa Children's Hospital. "What we really want to do is raise awareness for the children's hospital," said John Meehan, race director and pediatric surgeon at the hospital. He started the Jingle Cross Rock in 2004, attracting about 60 participants. It has since grown into the largest cyclocross race in the Midwest, Meehan said. Similar to a steeple chase, cyclocross is a form of bike racing that combines running short distances and cycling. This year, about 800 people — ranging from beginners to some of the world's top cyclists — are competing in 27 races spread out between Saturday and today. Meehan estimated this year's event could raise $20,000 — about $8,000 more than last year. BIKEIOWA JINGLECROSS PHOTOS
