If you have not signed up for the biweekly BIKEIOWA Ride Reminder, here is what you are missing. You can sign up by looking directly below the BIKEIOWA.com look to the left of the screen and typing in your email address. Ride Reminders are sent approximately every 2 weeks depending on the news and events going on.
It's been about a month since the last Ride Reminder and the amount of information below shows it! The warm weather has still been toying with us, and I'm OK with that. Anytime I can ride in shorts and short sleeves in early November in Iowa is fine by me! Although the wind is howling big time outside right now. I hope it's a good tailwind for someone. Somewhere.

What's HOT when the weather is NOT?
  • Cranksgiving 12 items in 12 Stops. Bring a bike, a bag, a lock and a friend for this charity event for the Food Bank of Iowa. This Saturday in Des Moines - Don't miss it or live vicariously through my pictures!

  • Tour De Lights This annual walk/bike/run through Jolly Holiday Lights at Water Works Park in Des Moines will happen on Sunday evening, November 18th - a special preview treat of the park before it's open to the public! Cyclists are meeting at Court Ave Brewing Co. for libations and contests prior to the 14 mile round trip ride to view the lights and back. Show up at the park and ride only 3.5 miles. Holiday costumes for you and your bike are highly recommended!

  • Iowa's Share the Road License Plate: OK fellow cyclists. We have very limited time to reach our initial 500 plates or we may lose our chance for Iowa to have a Share The Road plate, Only 237 Plates have been purchased. 263 plates need to be sold by December 1st before they are issued. When this program was first discussed, over 650 cyclists expressed interest to purchase plates. I'll admit I should have been the 1st one to have my $$ at the doorstep of the Iowa Bicycle Coalition, but I procrastinated for months before I sent my application in. Fill out an application today - Before it's too late.

  • BIKEIOWA.com will start listing photos on a new gallery . Here is a news item I posted a couple of weeks ago explaining it all. YOU can view photos several different ways, plus you can leave comments. I've heard both good and bad feedback about the new gallery. Email me if you have comments swaying either way. Nothing is set in stone. Sorry it is taking so long to incorporate the new gallery into the site, but I've been enjoying the riding weather! Look soon for some site changes.

  • WANTED: MORE COWBELL: Seeking exuberant male and females with party attitude and multiple skill-sets to include the ability to walk up Mt Krumpit to cheer the field with cowbell and beverage in hand. Must be willing to travel... (to the Johnson county Fairgrounds on November 25th and/or 26th). Must be open-minded and willing to try new things (maybe even the 35 minute beginners race??). May find it awkward at first to see so many people having so much fun at the bike race. Most importantly is the ability to play cowbell aggressively invoking a dynamite sound with a unique tempo while racers pass by. If you fit this profile, we will see you at Jingle Cross!

  • The BIKEIOWA Sponsors are always HOT no matter what the weather is like! I want to send a "Big Ring" round of THANKS to all the BIKEIOWA.com sponsors. WOW - What a great group this year. They make the site happen, and I hope you support them when you can! Check out all their sites below and tell them where you saw their ad.

Worthy mention
  • The Trestle to Trestle Trail officially opened for bicycle and pedestrian traffic on Saturday, November 10th. This 3.75 mile 10 ft. wide asphalt trail connects the Inter Urban Trestle Bridge (south of the Euclid Bridge) to the Trestle Bridge (north of I-80/35) connecting to the Johnston trail system. A formal trail grand opening will take place in the spring of 2008. Oh yes.. snow removal will apply to this entire trail. Ride it all year round.

  • The 2nd annual off-road Dirty Duathalon took place on a beautiful Saturday Nov 3rd with roughly 80 participants for a Bike - Run - Bike extravaganza. Check out race photos, write-ups and results.

  • Mark your calendars for the infamous Big Wheel Rally . The Big Wheel Rally is an opportunity for friends to get together and show off their creative talent(s), and help a great cause! The last four Rallies have benefited "The Heart Connection Children's Cancer Programs." Last year's Rally raised over $4,000 thanks to all of the many generous contributions! Get working on your ride!

  • Need I mention Spooky Cross? I have not sent a Ride Reminder since the mud-fest have I? This was one nasty, muddy, rainy day, but you know what that means for cyclocross??? PERFECT racing conditions! The race was held Sat & Sun (Oct 13th & 14th) at Dale Maffit Reservoir - Cumming, IA Check out the Mud-Fest photos from Sat and Sun.

Quickies
  • Des Moines is one the verge of releasing a Bike Parking Policy that outlines long and short-term bike parking solutions, a Bike Rack installation program as well as 215 bike racks that will be install in Des Moines proper over the winder months. In the works are a citywide Bicycle Master Plan with more bicycle lanes and commuter routes and an updated trails map. Stay tuned for more good new here.

  • The Des Moines Beaverdale Neighborhood in is forming a committee to make Beaverdale trails more visible. Beaverdale sets amongst the contact Bill Nolan at toolbox3502@msn.com if you are interested in participating. The nest meeting is Dec 4th at 7pm in the conference room at ACE Hardware. It's great to see this community taking the initiative. There are so many avid cyclists in this area!

  • Did you know that there is not one ride posted for January 2008 yet? Can we change that?

  • Music Buffs - Simple Man remake by Shinedown (LIVE) - wow - they hit it right on.
